They had the 16GB M1 Pro 1TB model for $899.99 the other day and bought it for my friend. Will see how the battery condition is. The previous one I got him had 95% remaining and I think 50 cycles but the magsafe port didn't work on it.

Let that be a lesson to everyone -- these aren't refurbished. They're --used--.

I bought 1 last month when it was $980 and it arrived in excellent condition and only 8 battery cycles on it! No issues so far!

These are just used. Best Buy open box is literally the worst open box I have ever buy. It's without any inspection, even worse than woot. Best Buy geekbench refurbished is not refurbished at all. It's just used with a fancy name, without Best Buy even check the item at all.

At this stage, I would trust those no name venders on Amazon more than best buy, as Best Buy is known as a big bulk buyer for used stuff and they don't put an eye on it unless there are huge amount of returns. People know that and sell crap to Best Buy.

yeah my personal macbook air i got from a price mistake last spring and it only had 5 cycles and 100% of the battery remaining so it's really a coin flip the condition you'll get.

I ordered one last year and got a macbook pro that was still under management by a company so it was effectively useless. Absolutely no QA on these refurbs.

At this point, doesn't brand new M4 MBPs make more sense at $1400?

I bought my 16" around half year ago with no expectation, I could change out the battery if it is bad, anything else I could've just returned. I'd say it certainly aint refurbished, but what I got was almost like open box excellent. under 20 battery cycle, no cosmetic damage besides very small scratch on bottom, came with some random insignia charging block (didn't really mind cause I already have enough charging blocks). All I needed was a 16" macbook with it's display & speakers and stuffs, realistically I do all my performance task elsewhere, can't really care about em being m1 pro. I'd definitely consider newer products for 14" for couple hundreds more, but I still think these are best options for 16" that I could return with no hassle or I could pull chargeback at the very worst scenarios.

Yeah, but a used model doesn't always have to be refurbished.

In Worst Buy's case, it's EXTREMELY UNLIKELY they did a single thing to refurbish them. Ergo, they're just used. Garage sale quality.

hard to say, diminishing returns as you spend more. you get M4 instead of M1 "Pro" so the performance gap is maybe not as much? certainly more efficient though

M4 beat the hell out of M1 Pro on single core and efficiency, which are arguably the most important two aspects on MacBook. I wouldn't even hesitate to get a m4 $1399 but god, that m4 pro with 24gb for only $300 more at $1699 with a much beefier cpu and 24gb memory to be able to run all 30B LLM is simply amazing. But then I'm hesitate to put $1700 on a laptop that I take out for beat - why not get a $13700k and 2xrtx3060 desktop for $600 and get another light air just to beat up?

So you see, it's all just a loop. You buy or you don't.

Yeah that's my dilemma, I bought M1 Pro 14" in the summer for basically the same price. M2 Pro went on sale for like $1250 (M3 Pro lower memory bandwidth so I disregard), and M4 Pro for $1700. But then maybe you could go up to on sale M3 Max, then to M4 Max lol.

It's good segmentation on Apple's part I suppose (if I'm remembering correctly, same idea behind 8GB => 16GB M3 MBA, okay might as well buy M3 MBP, okay might as well by M3 Pro MBP)

I think the nano-texture display option is what helps me 😅; it's so good imo but it's only available from Apple directly, i.e. no sale price

This is a joke right? A 4 year old unupgradeable laptop that's used for the same a new laptop with better processor goes on sale frequently. That has to be some twisted idea of a joke to call it a slick deal.

I mean in what world is this worth 1999 retail??
