This isn't a beacon. Not a lawyer but you control it with hand motions.

I don't care about arguing on the Internet, just if anybody is looking to buy a drone, you don't need a phone to use it. This wasn't clear to me when I bought it and it's a huge plus.

We unload the mountain bikes, turn on the drone and go.

Obviously not where prohibited or around emergency responders.

I don't see what this is giving you over the 199 base price. A case that you can pick up on Amazon for $10? Realistically with this thing you want to get the three batteries for flight time. Also note that the controller free thing is sort of a misnomer. In the US you still have to have your phone connected to it. Fly legally even in automated modes. Not saying that's enforced or anybody will do anything about it if you don't. If you find that you do enjoy using it as a drone with your phone, you'll probably want to pick up a controller too

There is nothing in the US that requires you to have a phone to fly it and I fly ours without a phone most of the time.

I would just wait and see what the upcoming DJI Flip has to offer later this week even though it will be more expensive.

The DJI Mini and Mavic line have pro-like video cameras.

He's talking about the nonsense rule about recreational drone pilots must be in control of their drone; the rules and regulations say the pilot in control must be able to guide their drone at all times which basically means the skydio using the beacon is illegal because you can't control your drone if it is not connected to a controller. Does the beacon count as a controller? Maybe but the camera doesn't. I think it's BS.

It's the best sub $200 camera drone with follow me mode on the market.

Its not as good as the mini 4k, and definitely not as good as stuff that costs 5x what it costs. Plenty of samples on YouTube.

You have to decide if following you is important.

Can and allowed to are not the same. The FAA requires that you get a trust certificate or you will find that you are required to fly under a CBO. All cbo's require you to maintain control of the aircraft and during automated operations regain control of the aircraft in an emergency. The only legal way to fly is to have something connected to it to regain control during automated operations. As I said. Will this ever matter? Maybe maybe not. You can be the one to test it

Ignorance of the law and how to apply. It only counts if you're a police officer and have qualified immunity. I assume you're not. The government will spank you left and right just because they can and saying I didn't know is not an excuse

Got it and I understand; I was just explaining that to someone else who didn't understand the "control" aspect. I have both the skydio and the neo.

As a recreational pilot, you are required to both get the TRUST and follow the guidelines of a CBO. Obviously YMMV when it comes to whether to fly legally or not.
