I never understood why people buy this crap...

You can put your money in tips bonds and be earning inflation guaranteed interest....

If you're worried about a complete and utter financial collapse you're going to have more things to concern you than your silver and gold amount.

now I fully admit if you want this stuff this is probably about as good a deal as you're going to get..
I agree... If there's a total collapse then food, water, fuel and ammo will be worth their weight in gold. $1000 of gold may only buy you a few days of food.

Pertaining to this deal, this is not U.S. currency it's just a 1 oz piece of silver. If I buy gold I buy U S. currency because it generally increases in value regardless of the price of gold.

Learning a trade that would be valuable in harsh times may be a better investment. If currency goes south all currency goes south. Diamonds anyone?

This is an awesome deal - 2% cash back with credit card. This is literally the current spot price (29.87bid 29.98 ask); so with cash back - it is cheaper than spot price of silver (not coin).Buffalo rounds at Kitco are at $33.94 (for 20+ coins) right now. (Not sure if they charge shipping - shipping was free at Costco). To avoid paying tax in CA - order more than $2000 worth (i.e, 4 packs).
copped 4, with 2% cash back and 2% exec card, absolutely worth it.

I actually am somewhat of a prepper with a couple years of food and other basic supplies laid in.

Stocks have gone up even more in that same time. You could have just bought an index fund.

Like I said in my original post I really don't think in a collapse scenario heavy metals are going to do you much good unless maybe 100 years after that when society rebuilds. A true collapse scenario the first few decades are just going to be chaos.

I can see it being cool to own some heavy metals. who wouldn't want to have a chest full of gold or silver?

but I wouldn't do so unless you already had significant investments that earn yearly income... as well as all the other prepper supplies you actually will use that are laid in
Well, buying these in bulk at CostCo seems like a more time- and cost-effective way to fill my scrooge-mcduckian vault for swimming than the vintage gold doublooms I'd been planning to get.

That's what I was thinking. Gold and silver have certain practical applications, not enough that they'll have practical value that would make them usable as currency or stored value in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. Their only realistic utility for most of us would be hedge against inflation, I would think.

Diversified "investments". To me PMs are a way to hold "cash" that's less susceptible to inflation. It's not an investment per se.

Also they're pretty damn cool to stack.

Ah - forgot about extra 2% - so that would be 4%.. Smilie

To the person stating "why would anyone buy this crap?" and "put your money in tips" - this for diversification (and as someone said - almost an alternative to cash holding). I already have 1000x in bonds than what I have in PM (and even more in real-estate and brass and lead).

Precious metals are only a hedge against inflation on extremely big time horizons (centuries). They're just as volatile as anything over typical human lifespans.

So unless you plan to live to 200, buying silver is not a hedge against inflation.

Please people, just buy S&P 500 ETFs. Stop gambling your money like this...

Not a true collapse. But what about in between a scenario where inflation drastically devalues the $?
This. Inflation goes crazy AND the financial institutions that hold your silver fund or whatever go dark.

These are not coins, they are rounds. Only value is in the melt.
Glad to know. My state charges sales tax on coins.
