Pretty good deal. Rare to see a decent sale on a non-gio Ibanez.

Solid guitar for that price. Dig the finish. If I didn't already 14 others, I'd probably buy it 😂

I have a 1988 RG140 (somewhat rare) and early 90's 540SLTD. Both play very nice for what they are. And that was the end of my Ibanez period. I still like the look of an Ibanez, very clean.

Thoughts on this as a first guitar for a pure beginner? Was considering a pacifica too.

This would be fine. Ibanez are solid guitars and most importantly for a beginner, they are light. The Pacifica is a nice guitar as well. I've been looking for a high end Pacifica (Bochi: The Rock!) but they rarely go on sale. In this price range you're looking at the 112V, for $45 more. The Pacifica has 1 humbucker with 2 single pickups set up, while this has duel humbuckers. You might want to think about that when you make a decision, because the sound will be different on these guitars. But this guitar, being almost $100 off MSRP is a good deal.

I looked at the pricing on a couple of sites, and the 540SLTD is not only rare, but somewhat expensive. They must have got a good rep over the years. The guy who was the leader of a band I was in said I had to get a guitar with a Floyd Rose (big hair metal fan that he was), so I got the Ibanez (because I like my RG140) but never gelled with it. It's spent most of it's life in the OG case I bought with it. I had a stop put on the Floyd Rose years ago from a reputable shop, but don't play it that much. Looks good and is fast, so I can see why ppl might want it. I don't think I'd sell it though.

All good, I have a couple and like the way they play. The Wizard neck is incredible.

I think it's an excellent first guitar for a number of reasons. First is the simplicity of the guitar with it being a hardtail. Ibanez's, even at this price level, tend to have good quality control, fretwork, and setup. For a beginner that will have no knowledge of how to set up a guitar, the importance of having a well playing instrument out of the box cannot be understated.

Ah, bocchi mentioned. A man of culture I see.
