10 pages/month @ $1.49 /month
First, there are these consumers who accept the fact that they can't view their Netflix and other streaming services programs unless they're continuing to pay subscription, but somehow can't understand that this is also a subscription service, and that you can't print unless you pay. Those 'my cartridges have a lot of ink, and still won't print, holding me at random for money' comments are simply inability to comprehend how the model works.
Secondly, about the cost of printing, this is more tailored for folks that have printing needs occasionally and don't want to spend a ton. Get a cheap HP inkjet printer for $20-40, pay $1.50 per month. You get 10 pages per month, which roll over to the next months if you don't use them (up to 30). If you go beyond, it bills you at $1.50 for another set of 10 pages. That's $0.15 per print, cheaper than any of FedEx or Staples offers and from the convenience of your home. If you're a heavy user, you could do the 500 pages per month, which comes at a lower cost per page.
On alternatives, if you bought a original cartridge, it'd run to a higher cost, and if you let it unused for a while, the print head clogs, you lose precious ink cleaning it. With these, you just don't care about the ink. You could print full-size color photos in best quality, or B&W text, a page is counted as a page. If your print head clogs and doesn't print properly, contact HP and they'll mail you a new set of cartridges, at no additional cost. You could maybe achieve a lower cost per print with an Ink tank printer, or a laser printer, but you make sacrifices with the upfront cost, size, color limitations (for monochrome laser).
Where they get you is my selling bundle add-ons like paper as a service - Slickdealers know better that a ream of paper costs less to buy outside at Staples or even Amazon.
For the Target audience, this is a great service. I don't mind paying $1.50 a month for the convenience of knowing if I wanted to print something urgently, on a Sunday night, I can do it from my home.
