I used to buy these at around $1 per pack, so this is a pretty good deal. You get 11g of protein per pack and it's only soybeans, a bit of oil, and some spices, no other crap added like so many other protein snacks. They're very crunchy and DRY in a way that makes you want to drink while eating them, if that makes sense.
They are both soybeans, it is just the harvest time. Edamame is harvested when green. Soy beans are harvested when ripe/yellow. Different texture, different nutritional profile. I'm not sure that it is a trick, edamame has been sold for a long time, and there isn't a lot of overlap in terms of the food products of the two.
The answer is simple. No American company is interested in making them. In contrast, the Chinese have a long culinary history with soy. Soy sauce is to China as tomato sauce is for Italy. They also have a huge soy food industry, fueled by Chinese consumer demand. That means soy foods are mainstream and cheap (even when they import their soybeans from America!). In America, soy products are considered niche and appeal mostly to vegetarians and health fanatics. That makes soy products expensive. When was the last time most Americans have eaten tofu? In contrast, many of my Chinese friends eat it weekly.

Soy foods are cheap in China so entrepreneurs rather import the finished products than start a whole new mini-industry here. Since edamame is not a popular American snack, why invest in a whole new industry for so few customers? It's simply much cheaper to import these.

Is it very similar to roasted soy beans?

It's exactly that - roasted soy beans, with added salt or spices.

FWIW, made in China. Not sure why this can't be made here in the USA.

These are edamame which are young soybeans and have somewhat different nutritional profile vs soy beans. Many people prefer edamame's taste due to their softer nature when eaten whole. This is roasted so it's a bit harder. If you are not use to eating these they aren't going to be tasty compared to chips or even nuts but healthier than both as a lower caloric snack.

This is the perfect summary for these. They are a good, healthy snack, but don't expect Doritos. I like the Bada Bing broad beans better, but these are similar.

Bada Bing are delicious but I do believe they have added sugar (at least for some of the l flavors), and less protein. I try to keep a bunch of different protein snack options around so I never get bored of any of them. Some taste better, others are more nutritious.

Edit: and yeah, if you expect Doritos you're about to be VERY disappointed lol

Gonna need to try a sample of these before I drop $15 on a bulk quantity -- no matter how good of a deal it is.

Agree; I also saw a 25% coupon on Bada Beans, just FYI. I think the plain sea salt taste best and no added sugar

My opinion is that edamame is the same as soy. I think they want to trick the consumer into thinking they are different and edamame sounds fancier.
