I used to buy these at around $1 per pack, so this is a pretty good deal. You get 11g of protein per pack and it's only soybeans, a bit of oil, and some spices, no other crap added like so many other protein snacks. They're very crunchy and DRY in a way that makes you want to drink while eating them, if that makes sense.

They are both soybeans, it is just the harvest time. Edamame is harvested when green. Soy beans are harvested when ripe/yellow. Different texture, different nutritional profile. I'm not sure that it is a trick, edamame has been sold for a long time, and there isn't a lot of overlap in terms of the food products of the two.

The answer is simple. No American company is interested in making them. In contrast, the Chinese have a long culinary history with soy. Soy sauce is to China as tomato sauce is for Italy. They also have a huge soy food industry, fueled by Chinese consumer demand. That means soy foods are mainstream and cheap (even when they import their soybeans from America!). In America, soy products are considered niche and appeal mostly to vegetarians and health fanatics. That makes soy products expensive. When was the last time most Americans have eaten tofu? In contrast, many of my Chinese friends eat it weekly.

Soy foods are cheap in China so entrepreneurs rather import the finished products than start a whole new mini-industry here. Since edamame is not a popular American snack, why invest in a whole new industry for so few customers? It's simply much cheaper to import these.

Gonna need to try a sample of these before I drop $15 on a bulk quantity -- no matter how good of a deal it is.
I agree, I just ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09J25B...asin_title which came out to $9.08 for me.

I have made roasted chickpea/garbanzo beans in my air fryer, skillet and oven. At this price I'll stick with homemade roasted chickpeas.

FWIW, made in China. Not sure why this can't be made here in the USA.
Appreciate the heads up.
Personally, that kills it for me

Anyone confirm if these are any good?
They are ok eating as is, the Sea Salt is the worst of the bunch.
Can be better if you put in something like a salad etc. Don't think I'd order again.

They're good. A very mild flavor, but the crunch is top tier. When I'm cutting I crave chips so badly and these definitely satiate me. As a healthy snack, it's a 9 out of 10.

Not very good, very salty, dry and hard. Whole fam tried it and no one liked it… I'll still eat it but it's like my last resort if I had no other snacks

My opinion is that edamame is the same as soy. I think they want to trick the consumer into thinking they are different and edamame sounds fancier.

Nope. As a huge consumer of soy products, I can tell you that they are different. I use soy beans for cooking but they're not something I'd eat raw. Edamame, however, can be eaten raw or minimally cooked. While they are both the same plant, edamame is harvested when the beans are still green and tender. Not only is edamame more tender, the flavor is also sweeter, almost like peas. Soybeans, on the other hand, have more fat so they taste more creamy and buttery. That's why you can make soy milk and extract soybean oil, and use soy as a non-dairy substitute. You don't see edamame oil, milk or cheese because the beans haven't developed enough fat. Similarly, you can't make edamame tofu.

I can't imagine there being many beans in a 0.9 oz bag. Sounds pretty expensive.

It's good to know, but I'm sure there are other brands that make something similar in the US?

I love the fozen edamame from Costco and tried the Sea Salt flavor. Me personally feel like edamame roasted doesn't taste great. Rather throw a bag of the frozen ones in the microwave for 3 minutes.

I just wanna chime in and say these are not very good. So if you're into "healthy" food, go for it, but if you're a normal snacker and looking for a healthier alternative.. you will be disappointed.
