Also, the poster is newish so might not know this, but "$ off" or "% off" posts aren't done here because they're not useful. It doesn't mean anything, and those offers are often deceptive.

At least one of the prices should be in the title and in the post. So it may be how the post was done, and the fact that it wasted a lot of peoples time, as much as this specific deal

I used deluxe with a home based business and also buying & selling stock.
TT Deluxe may tell you while entering info you should upgrade to Premier. Just ignore and proceed with Deluxe

This Costco offer for TurboTax Deluxe + State at $45 ($56-$11) is essentially the same as the Amazon offer in the link from last year but includes a $10 TurboTax credit (e.g. to e-file state taxes) instead of a $10 gift card.

How much you want to bet that Amazon posts its sale the day Costco's offer goes live.

Clearly you do not understand what is being discussed. Do you understand that turbotax comes in two form: desktop and online? The one here is desktop. All that I said was that the desktop version stays local on your machine and you send the data directly to the IRS, thus is inherently far more secure than online versions from name-brand and non-name brand tax prep companies.

Haha might want to check your data history and see what IP address the uploads are going to.

If you buy from costco, make sure to save a copy of the installer. The costco download link will eventually break.
Does anybody know how many desktop installs/activations included? Is it the same 5 as the federal e-files? Thanks.

If there are software problems, from what I've read in Costco's return policy, this is returnable. Probably won't find a better deal than this.

Thanks, interesting but it's 3 years old so makes me wonder if some of these differences are falling away. Apart from general discomfort that someone else mentioned about hacking, there's no reason the online version couldn't have feature parity since I'm sure apart from some UI stuff there's a ton of shared codebase. That they allow multiple returns for desktop vs online seems completely arbitrary so I'd never have imagined it. I don't need that but thanks, I'll look into whether I can save some change over the online version level I've needed to upgrade to.
It hasn't changed one bit (in part because these companies really don't innovate much at all). The shift to online taxes was an opportunity for Intuit to differentiate their products more and force you to upgrade to higher levels and pay for every single return. They tried to do some of this with the desktop version one year and there was a revolt. They lost a lot of customers to H&R Block (I think TaxCut at the time). Since the desktop is only a small percentage of their sales, and they still trick people into upgrading to higher levels anyway, they've left it alone. But there's no question that they want you to move online and that's where they're focusing their efforts.

i don't see rental in deluxe. Sure?
Yep, deluxe desktop does Schedule E. Make sure you're looking at the supported forms for the desktop. Intuit likes to hide this info. The online deluxe does not do rentals.

Started using freetaxusa years ago. Significantly cheaper and you don't have to go searching for a deal every year to feel like you aren't getting ripped off using it.

TurboTax Desktop uses Intuit servers as an intermediary when e-filing to the IRS. You can see it if you keep an eye on your router or just your PCs IP connections during the e-file process. This is from the TurboTax Desktop license agreement [intuit.com]:

Quote :
Electronic Filing Services. If you choose to file your return electronically, your tax return will be forwarded to Intuit's Electronic Filing Center, where Intuit will transmit it to the applicable federal and/or state taxing authority. Additionally, Intuit will store your protected tax return in accordance with federal and/or state laws. You are responsible for verifying the status of your return to confirm that it has been received and accepted by the applicable taxing authority and, if necessary, for filing it manually in the event that the taxing authority rejects your electronically filed return (e.g., if the taxpayer name and SSN don't match).

The IRS requires Intuit to notify it, in connection with the electronic filing of your tax return, of the Internet Protocol ("IP") address of the computer from which the return originated and whether the email address of the person electronically filing the return has been collected. By using this electronic filing service to prepare and submit your tax return, you consent to the disclosure to the IRS and any other tax or revenue authority of all information relating to your use of the Electronic Filing Services.

If you are filing one or more state tax returns, then by using a computer system and software to prepare and transmit return(s) electronically, you consent to the disclosure of all information pertaining to your use of the system and software to the states in which you are filing the returns, as applicable by law, and to the transmission of your tax return(s).

Deluxe can't do home sales or rental. Need to get home and business for those two. Not sure about crypto.
Deluxe desktop definitely does those things. Not the online version though. Intuit makes it very confusing to understand the differences.

Why turbo tax is more expensive than hrblock tax?
Intuit controls the market. It's like asking why Toyota is more expensive than Kia, only far worse.

5 installs, but all linked to the same Intuit account. So if you share, you have to share your Intuit account information. It doesn't mean you can see each others returns...I think.

Funny yesterday it was 90 and today it's 108, so they're messing around with it.
