Confirmed, here's the pricing (after I logged in to my United.com account and I have the Chase United Explorer credit card):

LAX - AKL (via SFO) roundtrip

Money:
Basic economy $606
Economy $776

Miles:
Economy 34,600 miles + $41.80 taxes (includes Chase United credit card discount)

I hope my fellow SD travelers find this useful.

This is about as low as it gets to get over to NZ. But that's also NZ winter, so be prepared for cold, wind, rain, and lots of early nights.

Except if you're sure about the trip. And one can use chase sapphire reserve card which covers the cost in case of canceling a trip due to emergencies/medical reasons. One other thing to consider is the baggage allowance-carry on allowance can be limited on certain restricted fares

Did United BE to Australia recently. It's literally no different to economy besides not being able to pick a seat since a checked bag is included. It's cheaper to buy the seats than book an economy ticket.

Sorry I'm a little confused, could you provide more clarification? Buying seats vs economy ticket?

Sorry, should have clarified. If you want a specific seat you will need to pay to select it. If you have 2 or more people, you might not be seated together if you don't pay to select seats.

Incredible deal. Just a shame it costs me almost the same to fly from east coast to LAX.

Any idea if they seat toddlers with parents without booking seats?

The same airfare is also available if you book directly with United, no need to book via Expedia
