Why are you saying this? It's the opposite, they are selling overstocked motherboards and memory by bundling them with a highly sought after CPU
The 299 bundle is great place to start a new build. A 4060/7700 XT (or even a 4070) would be a great pairing for a pretty sick sub-1000 PC
What?? They are doing this because the 9800x3d is selling like hotcakes and they can get rid of crappy MOBOs and RAM kits by bundling it to customers who dont know what they're buying

I just upgraded from my RX 480 8GB to a B580, and am now thinking it might be time to upgrade from my i7-7700K

Unfortunately, there won't be a Micro Center near me until the Santa Clara store opens, but if the $350 sale price on the 7700X bundle is back I'd be tempted to buy that, even over the $304 7600X bundle on Newegg back in November (https://slickdeals.net/f/17910078-amd-ryzen-5-7600x-gigabyte-b650m-gaming-plus-wifi-matx-board-32gb-ddr5-6400-mhz-ram-free-1tb-nvme-for-304-newegg)

But now I'm wondering: depending on when the Santa Clara store opens, would the 7700X still be a good move? Considering that bundle was $370 back in late April of 2023

For $30 more, I'm not sure if the 9700X is worth it

FYI, I tend to keep my PC hardware as-is for a long time (hence the 8 year old CPU and GPU, lol)

After reading the community wiki, I have to disagree personally. I'd much rather have a strong base foundation (CPU and RAM) and then upgrade the GPU 1-2 times within that cycle. I dont' think a "balanced" build offers any long term performance.

Just my opinion. a 9800x3D will be a strong base for your build for at least 6+ years. Within those 6 years, you can upgrade your GPU at whatever cycle you want/afford and still have a highly relevant PC down the road. a 9800x3D will stretch the legs of your PC for every GPU upgrade you do.

That's why I think if you can afford it, get the 9800x3D and a mid range/upper mid range card, then upgrade the card down the road. Your CPU will never be the weakest link because you always want your GPU to work at 100% and your CPU should provide you the overhead every generation of GPUs.

Your System RAM, 32GB and it will suffice the 6+ years you have your system.

FWIW, I started my build in 2019 with a 3700x, 32gb, and RX 5700. I upgraded to a 5800x3D on launch, then a RTX 3080, and now at the RTX 4080 Super. My base has stayed relatively the same and I feel the 5800x3D will provide the overhead I need for the RTX 6000 series or Radeon 10000 series or whatever they call it.

For gaming, only need strong CPU if playing at super high refresh rate 1080P.

I was using a 4090 with a i5-11400 (before making new build with 7950X3D) and while there was definitely a bottleneck, games were still playable and gorgeous at 4k.

False. Just under a month ago they sold out on 7800x3d and 9800x3d in Cambridge in days and couldn't keep them in stock in between shipments. If you think these bundles in any way indicate some overstock conditions then you clearly are not familiar with Microcenter - AT ALL.

Re: 7700x v. 9700x for +$30: I did exactly this however my goals may not match yours. For me, the extra bucks were worth it.

I was aiming at a specific budget threshold for a multipurpose family room PC for 1440p gaming, content creation, and everyday use. Since it's in our family room, I wanted to keep the noise down so I chose the natively cooler 9700x over the warmer 7700x, which would naturally keep the CPU cooling fan slower and quieter overall. The B650 mobo and 7800XT GPU I have are also top-tier for thermals with the GPU being also very well behaved for fan dB levels under load (and thankfully, no audible coil whine). Toss it all into a solid mid-tower case with large, slow(er) fans and it's very family-room friendly.

The 9700x did it's part in keeping the decibels down and with the modest edge the 9700x has in overall performance at default settings vs. the 7700x, it made the +$30 worth it.

One can wish Smilie. If there's an overstock in 9800x3d then it'll go lower in price lol

Yeah it used to cost less and came with faster ram.

Yes the 9700x is worth 30 more

I bought the 7700x bundle late in 2023. It's slow to boot up, but it's been rock-solid. I think they have a different motherboard now. This is the one that came with the bundle then: https://www.microcenter.com/produ...otherboard.
The 7700x is definitely not at fault for slow boot time.

Why don't companies make more white gear? I refuse to upgrade my matx AM4 build until we get more white board options. Not everyone wants a black/red or stealth inside. Especially with many cases available in white, why are mobo manufacturers not doing at least 30-50% of their boards in white options as well?

Yes, higher resolution, the more your GPU matters. The lower the resolution, the more the CPU matters.

But you're missing out what the x3D specifically gives, higher 1% lows for FPS for all resolutions. That makes a major major difference in felt gameplay. That's why I recommend a gamer to get the x3D for that purpose.

This is a known bug on ryzens. They need MCR disabled. Boots slow, but runs faster and more stable.
Can you run 4 sticks of ram on the boards now, or does that still cause issues?

Guess if I were to complain.. I wasn't able to stabilize ram (AMD Expo) out of the box, to the advertised ram speed of 6000. I was playing helldivers 2 and it was super jittery until I lowered it back to default which is 5400 (I think).

Lol I don't know if it's worth messing with things in the bios and risk screwing shit up when it's working perfectly now.

But if I'm bored, I'll do it one day with this guide
https://youtu.be/O6k9bmx0L28?si=IMHVb0GIqDZsr2s1
Set it to the 6000 Expo profile, set Memory context restore to OFF, it will be stable at 6000.

Boots slow, but stable. guaranteed 100%. Known / Solved issue.
