Wonder if it's worth holding out to see what the upcoming SE4 brings and at what price point.

FALSE INFORMATION!
Many of us have unlocked ST/TW/TF models at 60 days with only the original 30 days of paid service.
Just read any of the TF/TW/ST threads on SD in the past 3 years, you'll find plenty of actual users confirming unlock procedure.

Do your research. CS is very poorly trained & often just reads from a manual or script, they know less than most users.

FYI - my 13 unlocked just now, a day earlier than txt message said - with only the original purchased 30 day plan.

NOTE: unlock policy has changed as of 4/1/25 and now requires 60 days of paid service (30 days no longer works).

Also , not all stores do in-store activation. So you have to find out store , who have OSL team member that can help you with activation. So its YMMV

There seems to be a ton of confusion, I will summarize since I just went through it:

1. The phone will unlock after 60 days (you can text for the date)
2. You only need to purchase one month and it CAN be the bronze for $35.
3. You do not need to purchase second month.
4. Applecare is 1 year, and it starts day of activation. This is great.
5. After the unlock date, have at it.
6. This is not complex is it. Patience is a virtue.

Caveats:

1. 100% you MUST not move the SIM, introduce another SIM, etc. Either use the phone for the first month or put in in a drawer for 60 days. If you do ANYTHING to the active TWS sim, you are SOL. Do NOT touch the SIM (or eSIM), else you WILL be sorry
2. Turn off auto renew on the plan or use something like privacy.com to control charges
3. Why stress in Walmart store, just buy it directly from Straight Talk and activate it in the comfort of your home in 5 minutes. Sure you can go hunt if you like.
4. CB did not work in my case, so YMMV. Not saying it isn't possible, just didnt work when I went direct to ST.

Will the phone unlock after 60 days if I port-out the phone number during the first month?
I'm thinking about also doing a Metro deal that requires port-in of an existing number and using Straight Talk phone number for that.

Do not buy from WM. They will send you a phone with scanning it properly and you will not be able to activate it.
That happened to me when I bought an SE3 from Best Buy online. I had purchased one from Walmart online as well at the same time because the stores had the 1 phone purchase limit and I needed 2. The Walmart one was fine so it just seems like it can be hit or miss if the packing person scans the activation barcode when it goes out.

You get a phone for $250 and no phone plan.

I actually bought it for my wife a few weeks ago. It's a trac phone brand, I just swapped her total by Verizon SIM into it no problem. (It won't be considered activated and be eligible for unlocking this way, but we've been on the total by Verizon legacy $60 plan forever)
You could have just put the new sim that came with the phone in it and activated it on Total Wireless replacing your wife's old phone on the account and your legacy plan wouldn't change. That's what I did when this deal came out back in December and I'm on a legacy plan.

Thought about it, but heard so many horror stories of people trying to do that and it becoming a whole thing. Prepaid is great until you actually need customer service.

I know what you mean and I thought before, because of what I heard, that I was going to have to activate it on Straight Talk then wait 2 months and then switch it over. So when I got the phone I thought I would just kind of check it to see if it would activate on Total because I vaguely remembered the process online from a few years ago. When I put in the IMEI which I thought would give a screen that said it was valid and could be activated and then you click the button, instead it just went through right away in like 10 secs. I saw my old phone go to SOS and the new one come up. The part that sucked was that I hadn't ordered a case or screen protector yet because I thought I wouldn't need it for about 2 months.

So I ordered the phone on Saturday. The credit card shows pending charge...the CB site shows it's tracked pending but I have not still received any confirmation email from ST...does anyone have this same issue?
Same

I ordered on 1/24. On 1/27, the order status changed from pending to approved and my credit card charge posted. I never got a confirmation email. I tried to verify my email and never got the verification email. Under my ST account info, it shows some whacky contact phone #, not the one I entered when I signed up as a new user. I can't change it. Tells me to contact CS. I'm just going to play the waiting game and keep my fingers crossed

On an older SD I ordered two. I was charged and awaiting shipment. Months went by the the charge was not removed nor were the phones actually shipped. It was hell getting through to customer service who could see at the higher level CS that it wasn't shipped when I asked them for a tracking number! They didn't have the power to remove the charges and I think I eventually had to file credit card dispute to correct it. All the hours on the phone and stress trying to fix this makes me think twice on these deals now.

I'm stuck in a holding pattern as well. Ordered 3 days ago, as there was no indication on the Straight Talk website of the phone being OOS, and my card was charged. I haven't yet received a tracking number, so I chatted with CS. They say my order is "on hold" since the phone is out of stock, but a tracking number will likely show up in 1-3 days. Didn't leave the chat with a warm and fuzzy that they knew when my phone would ship. Why would they charge my card if it was OOS? So frustrating, all I can do is wait.

Similar deal with the order not being shipped yet. Ordered 3 days ago and order shows pending remote fulfillment.

If you ordered from ST it's well known that they're slow in shipping out orders (& they don't ship on weekends). It's a common complaint in most TF,TW & ST deal threads (they're all shipped from same warehouse).
Be patient, it's 2 day shipping once they finally get order to UPS.
