Once you receive confirmation that your trade-in was accepted for the $xxx amount, request the credits be returned to original payment method via chat or phone call.
Wait for unlock period (if you're only trying to unlock and bail).

There's nothing you're locked in to here especially if you go with the emerging consensus "best" option to do trade in in store requiring no credit after the fact etc

There's always a little bit of YMMV with these deals and experience of actual people is probably the best guide. That's what the past 12 pages have tried to hash out
I think given the way it's worked in the past and how in store trade in works, you should be able to walk out the door with the phone for maybe 80ish out of pocket (if phone you're trading in has trade in value of 799). And that's your best bet
The fine print has changed from last year, and maybe they'll still refund you in full, I've no idea. It remains to be seen. And probably why doing the preorder with the credit involved is a tad too risky for my taste anyway
Also hate mail in process in general for other reasons
