This means its made of either polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

In other words, soft plastic.

This is a big no-go for me since REAL Leather upper shoes from Adidas often go on sale for $30 or so.

They don't offer top grain leather any longer. Even genuine leather is now a mix of leather flakes and glues.
