Lol I don't think you've used this brand then. Those are not sheet metal, they're heavy steel.

The particle board I can't speak for, mine in my house and shed are fine but maybe if you're somewhere very humid or have a damp basement it could be an issue.

These can be very sturdy shelves and last a lifetime with a couple modifications.
1. Prime and paint the particle boards
2. Support the particle boards with with a 2x4 joicst/brace across the center.
Once joist per board is sufficient. Predrill two holes through the sheet metal and 2x4, then drive in two screws per end. You can probably avoid the predrilling if you have sheet metal screws but the 2x4 may split without predrilling. I included some photo's.

I bought several of these on the two-pack sale in December. I think it may have been a price mistake. https://slickdeals.net/f/17954862-2-count-5-shelf-muscle-rack-steel-freestanding-shelving-units-w-particleboard-shelves-black-48-x-24-x-72-4000-lb-capacity-89-44-50-each-free-shipping?page=4&src=SiteSearch&prop=&attrsrc=#comments

I'm looking for something to store my lead elephant collection. Will these work? Also have quite a few cement hippos.

I've used shelves like these in the past. The structure is flimsy (just look at the sheet metal corner pieces) and the particle board shelves will be warped in a year. I recommend going up to something heavier duty

I bought 2 packs for nearly the same price when this item was posted here last time, possibly could have been a PM. These are quite strong once fully assembled

The corner pieces of these types of storage racks are 100% fabricated from sheet metal, I don't know what your definition of "heavy steel" is, but generally anything under 1/4" plate steel is considered to be "sheet metal". And I'd be shocked if the uprights of these Muscle racks were constructed with anything thicker than 20 gauge sheet metal. 20 gauge sheet metal is 1/5 the thickness of 1/4" steel or 1/20" thick. These racks are not constructed of "Heavy steel". They're just fine for their intended use, but they are definitely made from bent sheet metal and particle board, not "heavy steel".

I apologize for not knowing steel industry standards lmao. I'm nit sure why using sheet metal in a negative sense is applicable here then because these things are solid af. Not sure what commercially available heavier duty shelving the average consumer is gonna come by.

No problem. Just pointing out that these are in fact made from sheet metal. And to tell anyone else otherwise is very misleading. The shelves work fine for their intended purpose, but I don't want people thinking from your heavy steel statement, that they'll be able to keep their full size lead elephant collection on these racks.

Not sure if you're referring to the same fantastic Walmart deal that I got in on too? But if it was that deal, it was for two 48"x72"x18" muscle racks for $79. This Rack is 24" deep, so similar, but not exactly the same.

FWIW, I've been very happy with my $39 muscle racks so far. They seem to hold up my Christmas storage Totes just fine, regardless of how thin the steel uprights are.

Yes they will, but only on Tuesdays.

The 24 inch depth is nice because you can buy one sheet of plywood (when the particle board shelves fail) and replace them all by ripping with the same cut (at the store if needed).

Problem with that scenario is, this has five shelves, so you're into another $40 sheet, just for the extra shelf

I get your sarcasm.

Im not a fan of the ultra thin particle board shelves either, but they're fine for certain use case scenarios. It's like telling someone they should buy a super duty F350 diesel because it's better at hauling than a Ranger, even though they're going to be hauling eight 2x4's. The recommendation is legit, the F350 is the better overall hauler, but is it the best bang for the buck, when all you're doing is hauling eight 2x4's?

I have 6 of these in the basement for the last 8 years. These are much stronger than any no-name Amazon and Walmart shelves. The box is just over 100lbs, so it may be pretty beat up from shipping when it arrives and plan accordingly. I have had the unions for the uprights be missing in 2 shipments, they sent new ones pretty fast.

I bought these years ago and they were recalled. Sagged terribly. Buy wire shelves instead

I have a couple of the exact same one, been using for the past 2 years. 1) it is really stable. 2) the board will bend a little if you place heavier objects.
