The particle board I can't speak for, mine in my house and shed are fine but maybe if you're somewhere very humid or have a damp basement it could be an issue.
1. Prime and paint the particle boards
2. Support the particle boards with with a 2x4 joicst/brace across the center.
Once joist per board is sufficient. Predrill two holes through the sheet metal and 2x4, then drive in two screws per end. You can probably avoid the predrilling if you have sheet metal screws but the 2x4 may split without predrilling. I included some photo's.

Do I think this product is flimsy? No. It's actually very well built.
Do I think the particle board will last forever? Nope! Depending on climate, it may not last as long as you expect.
That being said, the particle board is easy enough (and cheap) to replace.
We bought the 2 pack at Walmart (40ish each) and we'd do it again for the same price. Good product over all.
Sorry didnt see you were talking about the partial board specifically. The older one is a different type, the newer version doesnt last as long. I have warping from all of mine and theyre in a garage with dehumidifier

This is the way to do it.
For even more support use two evenly spaced 2x4 joists per shelf.
I also have many of these in my basement. I don't push the 800 pound weight limits, but do keep heavy items on it like a few sets of rotors and lots of heavy cast iron cookware and the shelves have held just fine for over 10 years.
