The particle board I can't speak for, mine in my house and shed are fine but maybe if you're somewhere very humid or have a damp basement it could be an issue.
1. Prime and paint the particle boards
2. Support the particle boards with with a 2x4 joicst/brace across the center.
Once joist per board is sufficient. Predrill two holes through the sheet metal and 2x4, then drive in two screws per end. You can probably avoid the predrilling if you have sheet metal screws but the 2x4 may split without predrilling. I included some photo's.

I bought several of these on the two-pack sale in December. I think it may have been a price mistake. https://slickdeals.net/f/17954862-2-count-5-shelf-muscle-rack-steel-freestanding-shelving-units-w-particleboard-shelves-black-48-x-24-x-72-4000-lb-capacity-89-44-50-each-free-shipping?page=4

This shelf is great if you're not gonna move the shelf ever even slide down just a bit , and you use it with totes . I would not pay over $60 for these . As I paid 44.50 each , yes they are great . I would not say the same at this price range .

some of them are not well maintained, with liquids leaking onto them, and some have, what looks to be, mouse crap on them, but the shelves remain in great shape. considering the mouse crap, I will be tossing them and/or replacing the boards (somehow), but this is all to say that the shelves themselves are solid as hell.
on that note, maybe a dumb question, but if anyone knows of an easy/cheap/non-obvious way to replace these shelves: I'm all ears.
