The particle board I can't speak for, mine in my house and shed are fine but maybe if you're somewhere very humid or have a damp basement it could be an issue.
1. Prime and paint the particle boards
2. Support the particle boards with with a 2x4 joicst/brace across the center.
Once joist per board is sufficient. Predrill two holes through the sheet metal and 2x4, then drive in two screws per end. You can probably avoid the predrilling if you have sheet metal screws but the 2x4 may split without predrilling. I included some photo's.

FWIW, I've been very happy with my $39 muscle racks so far. They seem to hold up my Christmas storage Totes just fine, regardless of how thin the steel uprights are.
I get your sarcasm.
Im not a fan of the ultra thin particle board shelves either, but they're fine for certain use case scenarios. It's like telling someone they should buy a super duty F350 diesel because it's better at hauling than a Ranger, even though they're going to be hauling eight 2x4's. The recommendation is legit, the F350 is the better overall hauler, but is it the best bang for the buck, when all you're doing is hauling eight 2x4's?
