this was definitely a fun game, but it is restricted by its age. You're not going to get any flowy combat. It's not as pretty. I don't think it matters as much if you play it or watch a full playthrough. the main thing with the game is the story anyways. The game has the whole "your decisions matter" concept and there can be some changes for sure. It's not as big but it's enough to give a different vibe.
Witcher 2 on the other hand requires 2 full playthroughs. your decision at the end of Act 1 puts you into 2 completely different Act 2s. It comes back together at Act 3 with slight differences.
I do kind of recommend playing Witcher 2 at least. Witcher 1 is quite old and I think you will enjoy it whether you play it or watch a play through of it.

I already have it in my library. I never did beat this game. Maybe I should give it another go.

After playing Witcher 3 for over 200 hours, I was excited to play this and ...

No thanks. To archaic to play. Oh, well.

FYI
This is on the Luna-GoG list for those who play that way.

Might be worth a shot at a buck fifty, especially if there is no installing and you can play anywhere too.

If you want to play the game for the story, it's a reasonable price for what you are getting. Make sure to go to Nexus mods and download the most popular mods for it. It'll fix some of the visuals.

Overall the three-game arc has a pattern sort of similar to Mass Effect. Which is to say the original was a great game at the time, but it's going to be hard to play by today's standards. Might be worth just reading up on the general events/plot and picking up at #2 (which was more refined).

Inventory gets pretty tough to manage by the end of the game due to the sheer number of ingredients/crap you can pick up just wandering around, the storyline can be hard to follow if you aren't paying some serious attention, and there's branching pathways you'd never know about unless you looked them up online (the kind of thing we used to call a secret before the internet became a video game encyclopedia). Also there's a lot of completely unnecessary nudity/female objectification, which I find kind of annoying now that I'm an adult.

Fun fact: there was less time between this game and Witcher 3, than between Witcher 3 and now. Played it back in the days when it released, it was a great game. But even 18 years ago combat was underwhelming.

I don't have Windows, but picked up a cheap Luna controller on CL and the Luna experience is surprisingly good IMO. Hoping for Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 sometime soon.
