That's a lot of pages per dollar. The guy wrote it all by hand, too. Fountain pens. I started reading it, but never finished. What I read was good, though.

I bought this the last time it was on sale in October, and it's a huge set of books.

I loved Cryptonomicon by same author. This series I regret to say I found impenetrable. Didn't make it past the first 50 pages. Not because it wasn't well written- just wasn't my thing. That said, many people love this series and that's a good price!

This series is incredible, but it's definitely not for everyone. Worth giving it a shot at this price if you suspect you may enjoy it.

I absolutely love reading and Neal Stephenson was one of my favorite authors, until he came out with this series of books. They're just a massive and seemingly unending boondoggle of a book series. You will likely find much more enjoyment spending your time reading something else.

Love his work in general. Snow Crash and his other cyberpunk kinda works are pretty much classics now. This trilogy was definitely something different, but I found it a bit tedious at times as well (+Anathem, another pretty good but too long title). Still worth reading at least once.

For me, Cryptonomicon was the best reading experience. Biggest fan. Waited years for this series to come out. First book I ever bought a hardcover of. Realized 50 pages in that it was the worst reading experience. Sad day, very sad day.

Perhaps we should read book 3 first?

"Inasmuch as The Baroque Cycle can be said to have a plot, it starts in The System of the World, the third volume in the series. The previous two volumes--Quicksilver and The Confusion--are essentially scene-setting. The first introduces us to our main characters, their personal histories, their social circles, their friends and enemies, the prevailing religious, political and financial climates of their eras, etc. etc. ad nauseam. The second tells us how each of these characters came to be in the situation that the beginning of System finds them in. Reading the entire series, therefore, is probably not unlike watching the Star Wars prequels before watching A New Hope--some of the details are interesting, a few of them are important to the plot, but you'd like the story to start now, please. With some judicious editing, most of the pertinent information in Quicksilver and The Confusion could have been conveyed in 100-200 pages, which, coupled with the fact that there's plenty of fat to be trimmed in The System of the World, would have given us the entire story in one volume, roughly the same size as Cryptonomicon"

I absolutely loved this series even after listening to it on audiobook out of order too. It is a masterpiece if you like alternative history.
