After losing a set of car keys one time at the gym, I swear by these.
Had I been using them at that time it would have saved me a lot of money in having to buy a new spare key.

Smartasses making snarky comments in airtag2 having hdmi…no. It will however have twice (and maybe 3x) the range though. So if you don't care for that, then by all means buy this one.
so what is the range on these current tags? I'm not an apple guy but daughters do have tons of apple stuff. Not sure they have a use for these things but wondering if my daughter in college might

The whole HDMI joke is sooo old and past its time. It is now outright annoying. Are people still expecting it to be funny by posting?

I think it's 30 meters? Or feet? and will now be 60?

Regardless though, it only matters if ANY iPhone is within that range. The way it works is it beacons to that 30 range. And then other iPhones alert Apple servers if the location of the AirTag. Which will then give you a notification of its position. If you marked it as stolen or lost then it will alert you. It also does some fancy stuff to locally track your keys in your house by showing you a compass pointing to it. It can also alert you if you leave an object behind, like at a coffee shop if you're outside a given range of it.

It uses low-energy Bluetooth signals. The new version will just extend the range of the beacon sent out. You can track the AirTags from across the world as long as an iPhone is within 30 meters (or feet, forget which) of it.

Ya. The Costco owner lives down the street from me out in middle class suburbia. Drives in old Saturn.

May want to wait for AirTag 2 to come out this year
It's also reported that they've finally allowed 3rd party "airtags" to integrate into the "find my phone" network.

There's also temu selling ultra-cheap "airtag" copies that seem to last as long or are as well made as apple's airtags.

Theres not much that goes into an airtag in terms of components and how much it actually costs so I'm not surprised.

I just really wish there was a decent Android equivalent yet. I tried Tile and they were a big fat fail.

I bet 1/2 of your stuff at home is made in China, including your iPhone, computer chips, car parts, furniture, shoes, utensils, food and most of your gadgets.
If you want to criticize countries the US can't compete with, then don't buy them; otherwise, shut the F*** up.

Tile wasn't effective b/c it was still using bluetooth 4.0 which was much weaker than bluetooth 5.0 in terms of range & battery life. Also only other users who use the TILE app will ping locations which severely decreases the usability of the network and thus the product itself.

There was an article last year stating that end of 2024 to early/mid 2025 android and apple "find my" apps will now be integrated to the same network - which will significantly improve apple's "find my" network as apple continues to lose market share in many lower socioeconomic countries (S America, Africa, SE asia, etc.).

https://worldpopulationreview.com...by-country

Airtags are just ultra-low energy usage bluetooth 5.0/2/4 devices transmitting GPS data back to a central network according to device ID

Give it time, ultra cheap "airtags" are coming/almost here.
