I took Zipair to Tokyo last year. Keep in mind this is Japan Airline's low cost provider. The flight is barebones and you'll pay for EVERY upgrade (meals, leg room, luggage over 15 lbs, breathable air, etc).
True, this is an economy airline option and JAL is superior; however, the only real difference I notice is in the in-flight options such as entertainment and meals/beverages. You can add a meal for $10-20, or choose the "value" option for about $80-$100/way, which allows you to choose your seat, check in luggage up to 30kg, one personal carry on up to 7kg, and get a meal. Most airlines charge for check in luggage now. Legroom is 31" and on par with most (excludes business and first class). The kicker is you save almost 40-50% of a JAL ticket. IMO this is a great option to save some money without feeling like you are on a very budget airline. It's more like Southwest than Spirit if that makes sense.
Doesn't seem nearly as bad as Spirit airlines still

At least the WiFi is free and usable. It was also great ordering hot noodles whenever.

Although this is true, I think the pricing is relatively reasonable...it's a couple of bucks for instant ramen. They probably lose money on that since they have to heat water in the sky to give it to you.

6ft 190ish lbs man.
as international flights go, zipair is great for the price. flew from tokyo to bangkok/seoul. I was told it was lower tier brand of japan air.

as previous post has described.
i got about 5 inches of leg room (front seat to my knee)
seats have good cushion and head rest. i remember going on, and thinking holy crap its clean, staff friendly and adorable.

you dont get food, pillows, blankets, pick seats, no entertainment screen so DL your netflix/hulu etc. you get carry on.you can order food/seat selection etc when you are buying ticket.

LAX to TOKYO during off season is about 380-440 regularly.

i would recommend to anyone wanting a cheap flight. i think its worth it.

side note. idk if they still have it, but they offer FREE WIFI.

food wise, dont bother getting buying inflight meals when youre flying from US to Japan its horrid. On the way back from Japan, the Zipair meals are not bad if you like japanese food. Its better than most japanese food in the US even if its lower quality for Japanese standards. They have a cute kids bento if youre flying with kids (fyi, the kids ticket is dirt cheap like $90). The other option is to get a bunch of conbini stuff at NRT or buy some too go food (unagi don) from one of restaurants in Narita city which is one stop on the train from NRT. Narita city itself is underrated and one should def check it out.

off season, sometimes you can get their lay flat biz class seats for around $1k each way.

It would be quicker to tell you what's working with them. AA has been dog dung for years.
