I received an invite link for the free-tier service.
Be prepared to provide your full biometric data, which will be processed and stored by the Persona ID verification service.

I will pass! Too much info to share for a free service!

Also in the old $5 plan but created a new account last night. Logged in today and got a screen that says your location is eligible for the $5/m unltd plan: "I'm ready (button)", which takes me to the payment page. A little puzzled as I'm in the sf bay area, not to mention I didn't think the $5 plan was offered anymore either.

Do they still have it? Is the plan, any of theirs, worth for kids emergency type deal

Not working for me atm either. Also looks like their unlimited plan is now $30 if you're a new customer. Not worth it over something like Visible or T mobile at that price.

This is a mess. I had previously created an account (without paying for a plan), as they said it would help me get off the waiting list first. When I open the app, it says my location has the $5/mo. plan available. I fill everything out (including Driver's License upload), get to the final confirmation, and enter the BREAKFREE code. It says code applied, but the charge is still listed as $5/mo. plus fees. Oh well, I hit submit anyway since it's just 5 bucks and hopefully I can work with CS if I get charged. But then I get an error that service is "not supported in my area"--even though the app literally welcomed me with an indication that it is. This is repeatable no matter how many times I try, and how many ways I enter my address. And I'm in a major metro with tons of T-Mobile coverage. So I guess I gave account information and my driver's license to this company for nothing. Cool.

A bit buggy but I was able to register for a free plan. Best way was to try again or close the app and relaunch. If anyone needs an invite code: D09FSD0 worked for me.

Uh...no thank you.
I got my invite, read the reviews about the app (bad, and rightly so in the short time I attempted to use).
In addition to what's already been said about "you being the product" (privacy issues) they want to do an identity check to include your name, DOB and a government issued ID...
I think $5.00 for a TextNow sim card might be a more prudent choice (for me anyway). I have one already, TextNow is okay for a back up; thought free phone service for a semi retired phone would be fun, but, Hard Pass on Helium.
In the meantime; I'm really happy with (paid) Tello; awesome live, easy to understand customer service agents, that actually get your issues resolved.
