If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?

Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path

I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Lol with your DL and picture i can set up a id.me account which is enough to log in VA and claim benefits or i can buy a car never register it and exporting it and you are on the hook for taxes or open a bank account and scam on ebay
Credit is not everything
I already have an id.me. and you can't just use a still picture to verify. There is algorithm to detect if it's a real person. It's like those slider interaction to check robot.

anyhow, like I said, if people want to do bad things by using my information, it's already widely available. I am not giving up anything new. my dump and paste have all these already.

Same here. I think Helium Mobile just wants to collect data and not giving out free plans!

Do they still have it? Is the plan, any of theirs, worth for kids emergency type deal

I'm sure you love your children, and want to provide for their safety in an emergency. Personally, if I didn't consider the plan good enough, and stable enough, for me to use, I most certainly wouldn't consider it an acceptable phone for an emergency involving my children.

HELIUM EXPLAINS ID VERIFICATION

Q: I do have to ask you know giving away something for free a zero dollar plan, it's a bold thing to do. We all know then whenever something valuable is given away for free, there are people who are going to try to come by to game or exploit it. You know, basically try to get more out of the system than the system intends to give. So how do you intend to combat that type of behavior?

A: So first of all, we're very transparent with our customers, and we want to make sure they understand what the benefits are and why it's something that is for the better of society. And sort of leading with that intention, we hope that people don't abuse the system. But in the case that it does happen, we do have a few stop gaps in place.

The first of which is we do require identity verification. It's pretty standard if you've ever signed up for financial services. If you've used Robinhood, you've probably gone through identity verification, and it's very similar. Give us your name, your address, tell us the ID, a little selfie check, and this is all partnered with a 3rd party that stores all that information.

We don't store any of it. We have no access to them. And we obviously do not sell that information. So, you private information is very secure and protected so that we can make sure that it is one account per person because we want everyone to enjoy the service, and we also want to make sure that we continue to offer this great service to everybody.

cmon dude..they couldve easily avoid multiple accounts by asking for a cell phone number other to confirm your Helium account..I mean paypal checks this way but not a POS start up? No, they want your DL and other personal info..if you think 3gb of data is worth your privacy go for it
