If someone asked me how to make a free mobile data plan, my very first thought would be "control its DNS, packet-inspect everything on my network so I can tell who's doing what, sell that info to data brokers, advertisers, marketing agencies, etc., and insert enough legalese to my long-AF-that-nobody-reads-it terms of service that it's totally OK for me to do that." Classic case of "if it's free, it's because you are the product."

If you think I'm joking, check your own current paid ISP plan's terms of service. Non-trivial probability they're already doing similar to you, at least if you're not protected by something like the EU's GDPR.

Is that what's going on here, or is their business model different somehow?

Right now their 20$ a month plan turns out to cost a couple of dollars a month if you opt in to their location tracking. They are trying to build a network of hotpots to fill in what traditional cell towers miss. Turn on tracking and they map whenever they hit one of their hotspots. Then they try to get new ones in empty areas.

Anyways...So they will pay you in their crypto token., Which they then accept as payment.Or you can sell yourself. Im assuming they are going to expand on this somehow.

Also a while back they were talking about another app that carriers were going to opt into that allows people to use each others phones a a hotspot for a small fee.
Just a guess but maybe something with this as well.

They are not the only company going this way there are going to be some announcements very soon of others going this path

I gave them my email address for spam, so we'll see. Right now it looks like they just offer one plan -- $20/mo for unlimited.

Incorrect information about the hotspots. They're not trying to fill coverage gaps. It's mainly for data offload. Cell towers are very expensive to run. Data through Helium hotspots is free for Helium as the coverage is crowd sourced. The location tracking is to determine where data offload will be most effective. These are typically public places that have lots of foot traffic that lingers. Gyms, coffee shops, stores, gas stations, etc. multiple carriers are piloting this service already on helium's network

Kinda neat seeing people talk about Helium's real world use. I've had a bobcat miner/hotspot for about 3 or 4 years, not the mobile hotspot one. Keep on keeping on, the people and the market will dictate what happens next

Anyone else having issues with identity verification? Mine keeps failing, but goes through after the third try for a picture of my drivers license, then fails out completely.

Will free wifi calling and texting work when outside of the USA or will that be blocked?

I had never heard of Textnow until your post so I just checked it out and I have to say it's not even comparable to Helium. Textnow doesn't support eSIM's and requires a physical SIM. Without a physical SIM, which none of my phones support anymore, Textnow is no different than any other phone number/app like Google Voice, etc. Helium is an actual dedicated phone number on my phone. In my opinion having just checked out Textnow it's like comparing apples and oranges to Helium, they're two completely different things.

I used an old phone to download the app and activate. No personal information is on that phone and I'll just use it for funzy and see what happens.

Whomever posted this: "REQUIRES name, address, driver license (or other gov't ID) upload, selfie verification via a third party site." Not fully required. I was able to sign up without providing my address. Also, used my U.S. Passport, instead of my Driver License and there is not a third party site for selfies. The helium app has you take a front facing picture, left and right side, either taken by you or someone else. No selfies.

Some people are more worried (concerned) about giving out credit card info. Company might be owned by someone who came from controlled country where privacy means less than NOTHING. One Asian supermarket asked for SSN to get a $20 OFF $35.
Why wouldn't you do this to get the $20 OFF $35? You can just use any random SSN, it doesn't have to be yours.

What does unlocked t-mobile compatible phone mean? Doesn't any unlocked phone work? How do I know if a phone is t-mobile compatible?
