Example Retailers:Product Details:
  • Looking to some of the world's greatest thinkers and inspiring leaders, Brooks explores how, through internal struggle and a sense of their own limitations, they have built a strong inner character. Labor activist Frances Perkins understood the need to suppress parts of herself so that she could be an instrument in a larger cause. Dwight Eisenhower organized his life not around impulsive self-expression but considered self-restraint. Dorothy Day, a devout Catholic convert and champion of the poor, learned as a young woman the vocabulary of simplicity and surrender. Civil rights pioneers A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin learned reticence and the logic of self-discipline, the need to distrust oneself even while waging a noble crusade.
  • Blending psychology, politics, spirituality, and confessional, The Road to Character provides an opportunity for us to rethink our priorities, and strive to build rich inner lives marked by humility and moral depth.

Got the physical book from my wife for Christmas. It was absolutely terrible. This guy is a hack and so angry and the wrong things. I could barely get through it. Only reason I did is because I did not want to hurt my wife's feelings. He is so un American and bitter, just disgusting IMO

The guy is a hack. I'm saying this as a person who has read his Op-ed religiously for numerous years.
His entire shtick was how important characters and integrity are, and sanctimoniously criticizing the left for lacking those virtues. He often emphasized the family value blah blah blah. Meanwhile he cheated on his wife of 30 years with a much much younger research assistant. He made his previous wife to convert to his religion. And then, he cheated on her and adopted Christianity because of his new wife.
If your entire career was based on criticizing the society for not valuing family value and lacking integrity and characters, and then, you cheat on your faithful wife of 30 years, YOU ARE A HACK.

I think it's pretty rich that the guy who divorced his wife of 3 decades married his much younger research assistant whom he met while writing the "Road to Character." Cheers

Agree, this guy is the worst. Not un American, just not the deep thinker he imagines himself to be. It would make me so happy to see his actual physical books in the bargain bin for two bucks at the grocery store!

I don't know the book. It seems like you don't agree with ideas. That's fine. Don't say that the book is hack just because you don't agree with it. Let's others make their judgement.

Also helps if you include what you don't agree with. And keep calm.
**person who did not read book defending book against opinions from someone who did read book**

also, they didn't say the book was a hack, they said the author was a hack, and I happen to agree. anyone taking "character" lessons from david brooks (at least that's what this book appears to be about) has my sympathies. you seem to want examples of why this guy sucks, and I can understand that, but I honestly do not care to waste anymore time talking about this joke of a public figure. do your own research.

Right? I actually knew this assistant personally, and was a good friend when we were young. So I found it especially disgusting when this guy cheated on his wife, who converted to his religion because of him, and left her for a much younger wife and converted to her religion.
This guy doesn't walk the talk.
