What the app/Internet does is allows you to control the times and the charge level with my power company if I charge at night between certain hours, I .07 per kWh . So connecting it to the app and the phone and the Internet allows this device to connect to your power company and can be controlled/tracked so you can get a much cheaper price but no I've had problems where the Internet's gone out and stuff and you can just plug it in. I'll just start charging
