Are you in the far corners of your 500 square foot room when you watch a movie? How about two feet from the screen and far to the left? No, you're in the listening position. That's where you need your bass and your sound. So you set up to get good sound there. Your living room is not a theater where there are seats from wall to wall, and even if it were, then you'd not only need subs to get good frequency response in those nooks and crannies, but you'd need more speakers for those areas as well. The truth is, one of these 10" sub is going to do the deed in most situations, as it will extend down to 20 hz in a meaningful way. An 8"? Not so much, as they'll not get any decent sound to 20 hz.
Want the subsonics? OK, but I hope you like your home rattling. Then you can justify a 1200 or more, but only for subsonics, not for anything you actually hear. I hope you don't have close neighbors.
But no matter what, unless you have an actual theater with wall to wall seating, then one sub will get the job done, and two+ are only for room modes. Even with two, you're probably not defeating all those modes, so then you want maybe four, but I'd rather have four 10" subs than four far larger subs, because these guys get huge.
And all of this is true in a 500 square foot room with openings. All of this is true in an open field. The listening position is what matters.
But as I said,
