The good thing about GOG is they keep the games optimized for newer systems. They will probably run better from here than through Steam. The Witcher Definitely does.

I recently attempted to play through FEAR 1 (on Steam) and it does not run well on modern hardware. The physics engine does not handle having so much power on tap. Ceiling lights will spin or vibrate violently, player movement jitters, and bodies will fall to the ground with no momentum or violently fly away. Also the game isn't meant for higher than 720p monitors, UI doesn't scale and crashes frequently. If you're able to find and mod the game to fix these issues, it's a fun ride for .99 cents. Just know it's more work than just .99 cents for the first title. I haven't replayed the other two in 10 years so no comment on those.

I'd disagree, played through FEAR 1-3 in 2023-24, mix between a Windows 11 laptop (i7-1355u) and Steam Deck. All above installed via Steam and worked perfectly. Sounds like a driver issue.

*if I recall correctly FEAR 1 required a quick edit of a config file to force widescreen and / or a custom FOV, but that is a pretty normal chore for games this old. Fear 2 & 3 I do not think needed that though.

I played it again on Steam a couple years ago, and I had none of those problems with it. I doubt anything has changed since then. I've never heard anyone else mention those things, either. Sounds like it's mostly an issue with your system.

Reviews say expansions all have securom drm, so it's technically not drm free if you are playing the expansions, just a caution.

FEAR 3 is pretty fun -- I think it got a bad rap. It plays a bit faster and snappier than 2 and has more variety in environments and stuff. FEAR never got the sequel it deserved, but 3 is like the direct-to-video sequel that's sneakily decent.

Are there any easy VR mods for these titles? I think that's the only way I'd revisit these

Sorry but how does GOG 'optimize' games? GOG, Steam, etc are just pushing out the latest official version of the game. Unless it is a DOS game with no modern installer I highly doubt any major service is tinkering with game files....heck, if anyone was doing it I'd think Steam would be the only DRM provider large enough to even take on the task.

Ditto, I was highly impressed with 3 considering all the hate. The AI wasn't as good as 1 or 2 and agreed the level design was much better and more varied (especially the neighborhood and slum houses sections), shooting was also much more refined. Story was pretty cliched, game didn't lean so much on jump scares which I'm not sure was a bad thing. The option to play the game again as the other brother with possession powers was very unique.

Check out the mouse driver fix. It takes care of all that for me. Just have to drop a file in the FEAR folder.

I just tried to run it last week with my 4090 and was getting 19fps lol. Something is out of whack with the steam version. It's not running good out of the gate, was only using 30% of my gpu.

At the expense of the experience the drm need to be not intrusive to those who are doing it honestly.
