I have no clue why this hit frontpage, this isn't a good deal at all. There was a relatively recent deal for a vivobook with fairly similar (moderately worse) specs and a moderately worse cpu for $280, a full $100 less: https://slickdeals.net/f/18055347-asus-vivobook-ryzen-5-7530u-15-6-fhd-tn-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-quiet-blue-280-free-shipping

The screen is tn, not ips, as confirmed in previous frontage deal thread: https://slickdeals.net/f/17671602-asus-vivobook-15-15-6-fhd-intel-core-5-120u-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-379-99
Normally asus specifically states "IPS-level Panel" in the tech specs for the laptop display, if that's omitted it's usually tn.
The screen in this laptop is awful, being tn (twisted nematic), 60hz, 250nit, 45% ntsc (~62% srgb). Literally the only redeeming qualities are that it isn't below 1080p resolution, and that it's 30nits brighter than the 220nit absolute bottom tier fhd tn screens. This is essentially only a single step above the lowest tier fhd screens you'll find in laptops period. Viewing angles are non-existent, the screen is quite dim, and colors are dull and washed out.

The core 5 120u is essentially a much higher clocked 12th gen i5-1235u with a slightly improved memory controller and slightly higher clocked igpu, it's approximately 15%-20% faster overall. It's for most intents and purposes a three generations old alder lake cpu. While it has 10 cores, only two are p-cores, the other eight are single threaded e-cores for a total of 12 threads.

This laptop has only a single ddr4 sodimm slot for uppgrading and only a single m.2 slot (gen4 2280, occupied by the 512gb ssd). The battery is only 42WHrs, which is standard for budget tier but still somewhat disappointing at this price.

Overall, if this laptop had an ips screen, it would be a decent (but not incredible) value at $380. Considering the far cheaper laptops with relatively similar specs and tn screens that have been available in the past, this isn't a good deal.

Good deal for this specs. I've seen similar price point with 8GB RAM.

How is ASUS with BIOS updates on their laptops?

Also, anybody expect laptop prices to go up a little because of the increasing tarriffs and demand for people upgrading before Windows 10's expiration in October?

I'm moving on from a HP laptop because even my 7 year old 8th gen Dell is still getting BIOS updates (last one was December 2024). Dell latitudes and inspirons are always pricer than other brands. I actually checked for BIOS updates for a 12th gen inspiron on Ebay and there were still updates for it from December 2024.

Seems like a good deal. Personally though, I would prefer touchscreen + 60Whr batteries for about $70 more. If someone is primarily using it with monitors with a few meetings/classes in between, a good choice.

The biggest downside is the TN panel...if you can live with that, it is a good deal.

Asus updates their Bios once or twice over the span of the laptop's life and that's it. It's better than HP, but nowhere close to Dell's consistency. If you're worried about dell prices, buy refurbished - they're actually really reasonable in price

Seconded. Asus does absolutely not give a damn about BIOS updates except when faced with a lawsuit. Not even to fix security issues either

yea, my last straw was when i had an ASUS laptop back in college with an NVIDIA Optimus setup (for those who don't know, Optimus is supposed to turn on your dedicated graphics card when it detects games or graphics-heavy software, but revert back to integrated graphics for everyday use. Unfortunately, ASUS never provided the bios or driver update to get it working again after a certain windows update 2 years later, so it was permanently stuck in integrated graphics mode. That, and the laptop started falling apart at the hinge (Asus has poor quality control at the screen hinge btw), so I ended up getting a Dell XPS after.

Where did you find that in the specs? I can't see to confirm it... I see it can come with either TN or IPS but I can't seem to confirm which this has

It's confirmed as tn in the previous deal thread for this laptop ( https://slickdeals.net/f/17671602-asus-vivobook-15-15-6-fhd-intel-core-5-120u-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-379-99 ), the specs page for this laptop doesn't mention "IPS-level Panel" in the display specs ( https://www.asus.com/us/laptops/f.../techspec/ ), and shi.com lists the screen as being tn in their listing ( https://www.shi.com/Product/48039...04VAP-SB54 ). Meanwhile, there are no places where I can find the non-touchscreen version of this laptop referred to as having an ips panel.

Sometimes, deals are posted specific to a certain store. In this case, a lot of people have rewards money from Staples, so this would be decent deal for someone who has rewards money they need to use up at Staples even if the other laptop might be a better deal for the money.

It is also why people are supposed to put the name of the store in the title when posting a deal on slickdeals, although most people don't seem to comprehend this.
