I don't think intel has anything to make it worth while. They have become complacent in the chip world.

Also the M5 likely coming out in the second half of this year, it's a moving target.

I assume the SSD cannot be upgraded to 1TB or higher. At this price point, 512GB seems to be a set back on otherwise sold specs.

If you're buying for this reason you really should just buy a Nvidia DIGITS. At least the base line specs of 512gb and 24 gig ram won't run any high weight models if that's your intent. As a overall computer where AI isn't important for you then it's a good laptop.

Two finder windows, drag and drop between them

I've used a mac for work since 2017 and personally since the Pismo Powerbooks. I'm also a photographer shooting RAW since 2003. Largest on-board storage I have is 1TB in my personal laptop and my work is 512GB. None of them ever come close to maxing out because large and long term storage sits on a NAS that's backed up to the cloud. My work computer being 512GB is sitting at 120GB used. Any files are on shared drives, OneDrive, or Sharepoint. The need for onboard storage is an old way of looking at computer specs...there are much better ways to handle storage.
Thanks for sharing your tip and take without sounding like a jerk. The file count is one thing, but I often want to know what the total size of several files are combined and haven't found a way to do that like Windows. Also, if only they had a "Cut" function instead of "Copy", I wouldn't need two windows open and hovering the file over buttons and folders to traverse is also slow.

Photos processing I can get away with on smaller drives, but I work with video and 4K can get quite large. Definitely can offload files as well, but having it readily available while not connected to a network is helpful on quite a few occasions.

I suggest using the column view in Finder. If you highlight multiple files, it'll show in the preview window on the right number of files and the combined size.

Cmd + X = cut
Cmd + C = copy
Cmd + V = paste
Just like on windows.

Right, video is one of those areas where having larger storage is beneficial. But if you need to, a thunderbolt 4 external drive will behave very much like onboard storage in a pinch (and cheaper).

Still, not enough storage for that price. What the heck are they thinking?

Best Buy was able to price match, which is great as I don't have Micro Center close by

PM bestbuy and picked up yesterday. I did a lot of researchs and this price is cheapest.
I got this deal from BB around Christmas. It's hard to ever say you got a good deal on a new Mac, but relatively speaking, this is a good deal for this particular laptop.

Kind of a weird question, but is the M4 Pro in this just as fast as the M4 Pro in the Mac Mini that comes with it? The reason why I ask is there's only a $300 difference here and you get a whole laptop.

I own a MacBook but the people here trying to justify the specs vs price is inebriated on apple koolaid. Theres a reason apple doesn't disclose the amount of RAM on their iPhones. Never forget this company is one of the most profitable on the planet because they can get away with these specs and 1k usd monitor stands.

It's just too bad PC laptop makers produce landfill quality hardware.

For a MBP this is a good deal. Pity they update their specs so slowly-- 14" screen, 24 GB of RAM and 512 GB drive for $1700 in 2025...you have to wonder when they're going to push their luck too far and a PC laptop will cream them.

It happened in the 90s, so not unprecedented. No hate here, I'm using an M1 Pro for Node.js and Unix development. If Microsoft somehow comes up with solid Unix support in a future version of Windows that would be big.

I love Macs and I'm typing on an M1 Pro but 512GB in 2025 for this price is inexcusable.
