Pretty good price for what you get. $40 of Co2 and $20 of flavoring. If you are looking to try SodaStream, this is a pretty good way to give it a shot. I personally never buy their flavors (too expensive). I use SodaStream because it's a cheap way to get carbonated beverages. SodaStream costs come down to Co2 and flavoring. For Co2 you have 3 options.

1. Use a big 5-20lb Co2 tank to refill the small cylinders or direct attach to your sodastream if you have the space for it. Cheapest option. A 20lb Co2 tank can be refilled from a gas supplier for $20 around me. Can fill a lot of tanks for that. Upfront cost is highest, as you need a food grade Co2 tank with a siphon fill valve and any necessary adapters. Tank will most certainly be empty when you get it, unless you get it from a homebrew supply shop or something.
2. Refill the cylinders yourself with dry ice. Price will depend on what dry ice goes for, but assume you'll need double what you're filling (2lbs for 1lb of Co2) as much of the dry ice will dissipate when you are working on it. Lots of youtube videos show how to do this. Cost around me is $5-6 per cylinder in dry ice.
3. Cylinder swaps. ~$20 near me. Lots of stores do this.

Flavoring is the bigger cost. If you buy the SodaStream flavors, it's around $1 a liter, which around me, $2 is what a 2L costs, so you're not saving anything over just buying 2L. The only real perk is the space/environment/convenience saving aspect. The cheapest option is to find a bulk flavoring method using something weird. I know some people will buy bulk snow cone flavoring syrup and use that. I will buy the squirt water flavor enhancers (Mio style). You can get store brands for $2 for a bottle. You can stretch them as much or as little as you want, depending on how much flavor you want. A $2 bottle can flavor 6L at a moderate flavoring level. If you like lightly flavored, it will be cheaper.

What's the best solution for getting flavored, unsweetened carbonated water from a Sodastream? I had one years ago and used True Lime and Lemon, but got tired of the flavors and went back to buying cans of flavored seltzer.

Unfortunately not great options, but bubbly has some now, they're okay

Another alternative for flavor is buying the bulk box of soda syrup they use for soft drink serving machines. I believe they have best buy dates once opened. You can get them at Sam's Club, Costco Business Center, Gordon's Food Services, maybe some other local places.

Also, if you are a caffeine junky, preworkout powders work pretty well as flavouring. Probably not the cheapest option but if you were already taking preworkouts...

About how many bottles will each CO2 cartridge carbonate before it's empty?

The product description just says "One SodaStream reusable carbonating bottle can save up to thousands of single use plastic bottles."

It really depends on how much you use. I've had a sodastream for years and i get my co2 direct from their website. The last time I got 4 canisters was september of last year and I'm still on the 1st one. I only use mine periodically. In the summers I use it a lot more and if I recall assuming drinking nothing by sodas, one can lasted about a month.

Is there a good place to buy CO2 refills that aren't extortionary? In the EU you can buy them for 4 or 5 euros.

Train your palette to not be so picky. Drink water, add some bubbles occasionally, add a squirt of lemon sometimes. You need water to survive, it doesn't have to always be glammed up with crap.

You can add a splash of juice or carbonate some tea, including fruity tea mixes. We buy bulk hibiscus flower and make a tea from that and sparkle it up. Get creative.
