Strongly recommend passing on this one for now.
On paper, the specs look great, and is a better value than other WiFi 7 routers. Plus, Asus has free protection, etc. and a good reputation. And the "expert" review (dongknowstech) said it was good.

I bought it for $183 (15% off $219 for an old router trade in, + $5 member certificate at BestBuy) and tried it for 2 weeks. It was problem after problem (disconnects, thermal errors, core spikes, unstable speed). The forums are full of frustrated users with these problems. I tried a second unit (good value, worth a shot) and had the same issues. Replaced it with another brand wifi 7 router and it has been reliable with a stronger signal (it's a TP-Link unit, not everyone may buy with the ban threats)

Here's [asus.com]10 pages of frustrated posts on one thread alone. . There are other threads

Maybe a firmware issue will fix this in the future, but it's not worth it for now. I'm hoping Asus will fix it and it'll be a good choice in the future.

Plus it has been this price for a few weeks now, so I'm guessing it'll be available at this price in the future.
Do some leg work and you tell us

I literally just picked up one of these from Amazon last week!
Maybe I just got a defective unit, but it keeps randomly restarting. I tried updating the firmware, factory reset, etc. but the problem persists. It keeps showing "thermal_zone0" "failed to read rail 0 temperature" error codes in the log.

What's interesting is this one was replacing another model of Asus router I got about 2 weeks before that (which had defective 2.4g), which replaced my Netgear that had worked solid for 14 years, but finally started to fail.
My brother who works in tech highly recommended the Asus routers, including the first one.

So far I'm 0/2 on Asus routers.

I bought this on sale at Best Buy 3 weeks ago for 219.99. Used it for a week and 3 times it would just stop communicating with my xfinity gateway. I thought it was a gateway issue so I called xfinity and they set me up with their newest model. Set it up, few hours later same problem. Yes - I rebooted and even did a factory reset on both gateways and the Asus router. Firmware was updated too. Maybe I got a lemon but ended up just returning it. Im actually just using my new gateway as my router and it has surprisingly exceeded my expectations.
Reviews are bad for this, not sure why

Same farking shit here. I replaced a 2 year old Asus that seemed like it was failing here. This is a firmware issue and it is inexcusable. I talked with Asus customer service and they sent me a beta firmware. It seems to be doing OK, but i'm still getting a thermal error. I'm out of my return window now too. Unbelievable.

Had one of these and returned it. First this cannot run a VPN client...and in the interface they call it "VPN Fusion" because well for some stupid reason the needed a fancy name instead of what everyone else calls it...because that makes setup easier /s. When I say it can't, it can, the hardware just can't handle OpenVPN...in fact the hardware can barely handle the basics it seems, but the VPN definitely sits a core at 100% utilization 100% of the time. Eventually this results in random restarts it seems. Now I turned the VPN client(Fusion) off and just put the VPN directly on the system I needed to route through it. However, this improved the reliability, but didn't solve it. There's still some random drops of the 5ghz channel specifically. Asus did put out 3 or firmware updates in the short time I had this router. One did solve some UI issues where you couldn't even change some settings like "smart control" BUT I still had random restarts and core utilization issues....so still not stable in my eyes. Additional reference here for these issues: https://zentalk.asus.com/t5/netwo...rue/page/4

For reference I also tried a netgear nighthawk RS600 and TPLINK BE800, the TPlink shit the bed after about a month, and netgear was pulling shady shit with requiring a paid dns service to use a vpn, so I returned that same day amazon delivered it.

Wifi 7 seems to have the same issues across the board. They appear to simply cook themselves to death. The power usage is through the roof compared to previous wifi generations and the cpu's are running at higher cpu utilization rates. The upgraded version of the be800 actually has a fan(ge800). Basically you have to be careful which model you get and they all appear to have higher than expected failure rates.

The issue , for me, is that solid 6e hardware is still pretty expensive compared to 7 hardware which was being cleared out. TP-Link BE550 9300/9700 199 or 249. GE800 was below 400 for the holiday season.

Hard choice finding the best router at the moment. Either feels overpriced for dated or too likely to fail. If one has a good wifi 6 router it might be worthwhile waiting.

I had high cpu utilization too out-of-box and even after installing latest firmware. Read somewhere to do a factory reset after FW update which I hadn't done and that fixed the cpu utilization (all 4 cores used to be max, now only 1 is fluctuating between 60-100% and rest are 15-25%). I have heavy internet usage (many iot devices, computers, 10GbE network, 1GbE fiber and 2 kids) so I tend to burn my routers. Asus has been the most rugged for me so I pay the premium for them. Adding a scheduled weekly reset in admin mode tends to fix / avoid a lot of issue both with early FW and later. Still hoping this router settles down with more FW updates. It's the cheapest most feature rich Asus Wifi 7 w/ 10GbE available. If not will upgrade to the next tier up and use this as an AI node.

Ugh, why does it only have one 10g port. It makes no sense to only have one.

I believe this model is kinda designed as a mid-range option or second router in a mesh. One port helps keep the cost down.

It makes good business sense. 10g on all ports would increase the price for something <1% of buyers would need or be able to use today.

You do not need them on all, but at least 2.

Understood, but the problem is the question of IN / Out. They should be the same. E.g. I am one of the lucky SOB's with 10GB WAN, then you want a 10GB Lan - you can the hit that up with a switch to other 10GB you might have. But with only the 2.5gb you basically cant use your max abilities. (and yes, I understand your going to hit other limits even if you do have 10gb internet)

Not sure if this model supports link aggregation, that can kind of work --- but its messy.

The be88u, be96u, and the be98u are the models with dual 10g ports for you.
