That approach might not be the most efficient. Replacing only the blades could actually save costs in the long run and would also be more environmentally friendly.
Also, if you drop the foil cover & blades in a cup of hydrogen peroxide for 30 mins; the fizzy bubbles does wonders at cleaning all the funk off.
So a new so called "close" electric foil every year is better than replacement heads; but compared to one $7 100ct box of DE razor blades, with up to 7 sharpest shaves each double blade?
Maths is hard.
As if the DE set ever cost more (LOL) it would still be worth it.
Can you shave? Are you sure?
THE EASY WAY
Let's put it this way, I only DE shave. Tried going back, and nope! And shave DE (Double Edge wet shaving) when I'm in a hurry. Not a problem; AFTER you get used to it for a few days. You have to have self control. Choosing the best ANGLE (per face zone), is about the only main difference, to learn. So if your face looks shaved perfect and much closer than any cartridge, or worse foil, but YOU can still feel slight stubble (not seen) before work, then so what? It's practice makes perfect. If you mess up well then it's your fault. This is the kind thing that you do better at every single shave. It's a known thing too. Not experimental. Just new to you. Fix it tomorrow. you can go fast the rest of your life, after acclimation (skin and muscle memory slight differences) Don't change it, learn it. It's worth it and you will miss out, if you don't keep at it. Get zero errors of any kind, ease into sharper blade angles, else you did it wrong. Read first, don't guess. Don't wing it. And by the way, you can trim around a beard, far better with DE. The fastest (and buying far fewer blades). Which for many is great for work and super fast. DE is THE, fastest per closeness! Closer than any way. I'll say again, you can shave fast with DE; but not your first week. It's just common sense. So, just earn on the weekends. Foil shavers work best following yesterday's DE shave. But foils lead to skin irritation, acne, irritation and redness that may take days to heal, and DE clears skin. Shave directly after showering and use a good, not expensive shave cream/soap, and an inexpensive synthetic brush (for value, cleaner, and lasting). It will get up your stubble better. Don't buy shave foam foam in a can, with butane. You want superior cushion, glide/slip and staying on power(film).
With DE you can't bounce the corners of the DE blade off your face. Duh. Why would you? Watch out. This is easy. And secondly it's holding the right angle, not to much bite. It's simple how high or low you hold the handle, to effect the blade cut angle around 30 degrees. That all you are slightly getting used to compared to cartridges; which do not get close comparatively, can't adjust (per your age), cause way to much irritation from heavy, REQUIRED friction. Conversely with just the slight DE acclimation (like a days or a week; but you still improve greatly over months) then you get custom closeness zones on your face that nothing can beat. You COULD do dermal-bration with it if you start foolishly with a huge gap(old, thick grey wire stubble), the sharpest blade and drag it like cartridges. So now you know not to do that and there is no fear. Shave LIGHTLY and you get the best results with sharper blades; that YOU decide how close to go. So STOP BEFORE your feel ANYTHING like mild irritation. Listen too. Do not start with slight red faced after shaving, if you are pushing the limited "experimenting". Coconut oil cures that in a few minutes. Only guys (or gals legs) being stupid then get errors. You will get zero errors if you read first (do not shave the absolute closest on your very first DE shave and do not then notice this is easy and go hog wild). Perhaps start with mid-sharp blade (Astra), and also a mild/smaller gaped (adjustable) holder. Do not hold it at a 90 degree angle across your face, trying to get "closer". Angle is not how closer is done (changing to larger gap and counter intuitively LIGHTER shaving is how it's done) and you really do need your face to get used to shaving, so very DE closest, as you also get used to shaving tricky face areas(naturally), a bit different than raking cartridges or also pushing in hard with a foil shaver. Cartridges do put you into very bad, pushing hard, shaving habits. DE may be just a slight 20% learning difference in getting used to it; but you absolutely must not drag it willy-nilly or "experiment" foolishly. This is known.
It's like DE fixed the issues with risky straight razors. Cartridges then went to far and are a lot of marketing BS. Training you to buy more and get less. DE is called "SAFETY" razors for a reason. Most people can do it safely. About the same group that can not use cartridges safely, can't use DE. There is no fear; but there's always some guy who did it wrong. And it can't possibly be him, who messed up. Remember no nicks at all! That's NOT OK. DE just needs knowledge and that's why I told ya. Not getting paid, like many shills. Beware.
As far as "good enough" or "close enough" then DE can do that better and faster too. YOU choose your DE blade model sharpness and your gap (and stuff) for closeness. None or it can't be had very inexpensively. Actually for less. Try an adjustable and Astra (mid plenty sharp) blades. Blades are actually highly dependent on your particular skin elasticity and secondly your good technique (lighter!).
As for fear, did you know you can actually still shave with a way to sharp of a DE blade, and way too big of a closeness gap, just via know-how, if you simply start as angled where strokes cut nothing and then very (very) incrementally angle it in, one tiny angle bit at a time? NO fear! And a small gap is like training wheels and for speed shaving, after being practiced. Or for new, soft stubble. Old guys start mild and work your way to an aggressive wide gap AFTER you acclimate.
Blade sharpness should be just sharp enough to not drag at all, through your post shower, prepped(well) stubble and not more sharp than that. Not many need a famous "Feather" brand blade. Don't view the sharpest and thinnest blade as a personal challenge. You only need zero drag. And BTW, DE is so awesome; that you can shave a LONG think beard and with no pre trimmer! The DE razor holder gap is WAY faster to clear and then continue removing the long stubble via progressive strokes. Faster! In fact use progressive strokes to shave very lightly per short strokes. Buff it and move to the next face area. Just don't keep going over the same areas to many times. WAIT until tomorrow! Or every two days.
YOU can setup your DE shaver for anything from LEAVING the stubble-look "enough" to nearly (good light) dermal-brasion LOL. Or the closest you will ever comfortably get and no errors. Just don't look at dermal abrasion (redness, skin shave) as a challenge and you will never go back to carts, or need better foils. Then you could use a foil shaver, just on ear hair etc..., and that means you don't have to buy the expensive foils anymore! Trying to get the closest foil shaver for your face (or even ladies legs). This means you need DE shaving acclimation instead of those. Really. Oh and ladies might start with sharp DE blade and mild (smaller) gap, so it's much like you may be used to, for legs.
Correct your angle. Watch the corners and you'll love it. Get the closeness level for you. ZERO ERRORS! Go LIGHTER strokes! It's amazingly better AFTER you stay with it.
YOU can get much closer, and do that without any errors at all with DE shaving. They are not one or the other anymore! A BIG difference. It's just an added perk; that you can do all this for pennies. It should cost more; but it doesn't!
