The best I've used are steel saw horses that you screw a 2x4 on top of. They are sturdier, they don't affect the blades, and once cut up you can replace them. It also stops cutting through plastic and slinging all that shit in your yard.

You just have to get used to it; Menards is always rebates as in-store credit. But it can add up quickly.
