I probably will pair with a 5080S or 5090S when they come in stock
Sell the 5950x on eBay for around 300. I just did this to upgrade to a 9800x3d build.
The reality is, a better CPU isn't going to significantly improve my gaming performance in any meaningful way (unless you're playing Jedi Survivor, which is horribly optimized and severely CPU-bottlenecked in some parts).
The 7800X3D is inferior to the 9900X in every other way except for high refresh rate 1080P gaming.
I would only spend the extra $100 on the inferior CPU if I were a competitive gamer.
"Competitive gamer" seems to be a pretty loose term. It seems like everybody is a competitive gamer nowadays, even if they make zero money off of it, don't participate in any tournaments, etc.
Not to mention the fact that the difference between 400 fps and 480 fps isn't going to make you a better player. Just stating facts.
I will put in here that I have seen both sides of this argument: on the one hand, you often end up buying a new motherboard *anyway* when you get a new CPU (e.g. if you pass the old one down to a child or a friend). On the other hand, getting a relatively late-model *motherboard * paired with a low-end CPU set you up for upgrades later, but only if you buy AMD (Intel barely even keep compatibility 2 years in a row, and by the time you're ready to upgrade, compatible Intel CPUs will be almost impossible to find; ask me how I know…)

Decided to get the 9900X bundle with the MSI X670E, and was tempted to FUTURE PROOF EVEN MORE with the X870E but I'm already spending a lot of money.
5 years, I got it right at the start of the pandemic. Which is also when I got the 3070 that I want to upgrade in the next year or two
I am surprised that the AM4 platform is still going strong.
Yes, GPU vram is the primary limiting factor for LLMs, so you def want the 16GB vram 4060 TI or 4070 TI Super if you can find one cheap. Any of these CPUs will do just fine.
Might want to look at used 3090s as well for 24gb vram. More vram = better LLM potential.
