Turns out that was fake news and the scientist misplaced a decimal point. True story.

Some says, It's best to avoid using wooden utensils because food can stick to them and harbor bacteria. Plastic or silicone utensils can also be problematic since small bits can break off and end up in your food, which isn't safe. Additionally, some stainless steel utensils from certain places may not be the healthiest choice. So, what about using your fingers?

Why??
Please see my long answer to HilmDaisy. Basically, black plastic is recycled from appliances that have fire retardant. Researchers found traces of the chemical in black plastic utensils. The effect of long-term exposure to even small amounts is unknown.

Calling it fake news is a little silly. The numbers they used were an order of magnitude off (10x, not 100x as someone else mentioned), but the underlying point that they were finding concerning levels of carcinogenic fire retardant chemicals leeching out of the plastics remains.

Just use wood lol
Wood is awful for cooking. Because it's unvarnished, it absorbs liquids, including soap. Old flavors and soap can then leech back into your food. Not only is that disgusting, it can be outright dangerous. We had a patient who suffered anaphylactic shock after eating food cooked with a wooden spoon. It was previously used to scoop peanut butter -- about a month ago. That's the other thing about wood: It's not nonstick and has natural cracks and ridges that can harbor old food and bacteria.

Don't throw out the black plastic utensils! They make great tools for gardening, stirring paint, applying adhesives/spackle, etc. I've even used a spoon as a shoe horn and the spaghetti spoon to scratch my back!

Food-grade silicone like these is non-toxic and will pass through without any problem.

Are these any better than the stuff found in stores like TJ Max for around the same price? The $60 list price appears to be inflated price. Is this brand really that better? Any experiences from other members here? TY

Are these made from recycled electronics? They say they have toxic fire retardants in them.

Use proper hardwood utensils and maintain them, not cheap bamboo or whatever they make the $5 ones out of. They won't absorb a thing. Like any tool, if you don't know how to use it, it can be dangerous.

Being wrong by 10x is completely fake news- but maybe that explains why the news sucks today, people find being wrong by a magnitude of 10x is acceptable. Just don't tell anyone the voting machines were off by 10 times. The weather man was off by 10x! We got 100" of snow instead of 10", but it's fine it's hardly a bad forecast.

The levels are hardly concerning, and the carcinogenic effect of those plastics has more to do with being plastics than being recycled plastics.
