After the initial study was published, the authors discovered a mistake. Apparently, the amount of chemicals released was not as bad as initially announced. But they still expressed concern over long-term exposure. Note that it's tough to avoid black plastics. Even if you throw out all your plastic kitchenware and dinnerware, you can't control the frozen food and takeout industry. Virtually all frozen dinners come in a black plastic tray. And takeout, e.g. sushi, is frequently in black plastic. To minimize risk, you can microwave the frozen food in another container. And remove the takeout once you get home.
As for plastics in other colors, the risk is unknown. The researchers only looked at black plastic because that's the most prevalent in kitchenware and frozen food containers. And it's known to be recycled from flame retarded equipment.
Whether you want to replace your kitchenware depends on the amount of risk you're willing to take. Many experts think that the risk is overblown. Others urge caution. The news came at a good time for me because I was going to replace my kitchen utensils anyway. Many were melted or deformed. Silicone was ideal because it's highly heat resistant, non-stick and mostly inert. And luckily, I found a similar set to this one for $2.99.
PS - Don't throw out the black plastic utensils! They make great tools for gardening, stirring paint, applying adhesives/spackle, etc.
