Some says, It's best to avoid using wooden utensils because food can stick to them and harbor bacteria. Plastic or silicone utensils can also be problematic since small bits can break off and end up in your food, which isn't safe. Additionally, some stainless steel utensils from certain places may not be the healthiest choice. So, what about using your fingers?

The black utensil thing was a bit overblown. It wasn't a really extensive study so we still don't really know the true danger, and on top of that, they got their numbers wrong and exaggerated their proposed risk by about 100x.

I understand not wanting to risk it but not sure it's a throw them in the trash situation.

Calling it fake news is a little silly. The numbers they used were an order of magnitude off (10x, not 100x as someone else mentioned), but the underlying point that they were finding concerning levels of carcinogenic fire retardant chemicals leeching out of the plastics remains.

Silicone is way better than plastic. Way more durable. Plastic always gets burned away and you end up with microplastics in your food. Silicone doesn't do that.

Yeah, worst is those sillicone spatula with plastic handles. Always end up burning them by resting them against the stove. Nothing happens to the sillicone though.

The news came at a good time for me because I was going to replace my kitchen utensils anyway. Many were melted or deformed. Silicone was ideal because it's highly heat resistant, non-stick and mostly inert. And luckily, I found a similar set to this one for $2.99.

PS - Don't throw out the black plastic utensils! They make great tools for gardening, stirring paint, applying adhesives/spackle, etc.

No, it's not "fake." The amount of fire retardant leeched was indeed less than what was initially reported. However, the researchers stood by their conclusions that it's still a concern for long-term exposure, given how prevalent black plastic is around food. For example, virtually all frozen meals come in a black plastic tray. This plastic is then often exposed to heat and acidic foods.
