Otherwise does this still require the use of something like a separate HDCP device (like an HDMI splitter) for sources which require successful HDCP handshakes?
With device like this my guess is the latter (especially since most documented sources are PC and not, for example, a Switch running the Netflix app).

I'm using OBS and it said 1080 for resolution.
I bought a different more expensive brand and the result is opposite. The recording image is perfect. But the monitor display has a squished image.
What's going on?
Use https://github.com/cehbab/mono-to...o/releases to end up with a proper 48khz stereo output.
(Run it in a 'DOS'/CMD window in Windows)
mono-to-stereo.exe -? shows extra options
All of the ones around this price point and cheaper are using the same guts, so you'll find cheaper ones.
You DO want something that has HDMI passthrough/'loop'/etc. though!
If you're trying to do something like capture gameplay, these introduce like 3-7 frames of latency between input and showing it in the capture program like OBS/VirtualDub/AMCAP/etc., and the passthrough lets you plug in another display to look at instead that just shows the input directly.
You can also find some that include 3.5 audio in (Mic) and out.
So for right around the same price, I'd suggest something with both hdmi passthrough and the audio stuff, like:

Also note for anyone grabbing these things. No, they won't do 1080P @ 60FPS. Only 720P and below will be at 60FPS. You can choose 1080P & 60FPS as a capture, but every other frame in the output will be the same as the previous. It's not a bandwidth, USB limit, or PC CPU power thing, it's just how the chipset in these is.
Also ignore any USB 2.0/USB 3.0 designation...I've messed with enough variants of these to say that they are all USB 2.0 devices.
