I was of the same frame of mind when the wife wanted ours mounted there, it actually works great for laying on the couch perpendicular to the tv. Happy wife, happy life.

Yeah in most living rooms that is the best place, especially in older homes. It's not like families are gathering around the fire to roast chestnuts and read Dickens by the firelight. Get a TV with good viewing angles and it's fine. Not worth ruining the functionality and flow of a room to please the Reddit AV nerds.

Anyone have this? How well does it work? Does it look good or cheap?

I'm with you. No plans to mount a TV on it. Does it work? Is it a POS ?

mine is coming tomorrow. i will report back. i planned to put an older 40 inch tv on it (many 5* home depot reviews pics have a tv sitting on top of the mantle) but I may just purchase a newer lighter 40 inch out of concern of the weight of older model TVs. but I don't think putting a 8-10lb 40 inch would be a big deal. you can always use those velcro "earthquake" straps to secure it.

for 140? bucks its a no-brainer for me. others may not be in that category.

Mine came in. It's really heavy, though with the rubber feet it slides easily enough. The heating element glows orange-red and is visible above the fake fireplace which is a little odd looking, and there's a thin backer behind to "enclose" the fireplace (though really only noticeable if you're bending over looking up into it). It looks alright in person, comes with a remote which is nice, and feels decently made for what it is. The fire effect is shown on the backing and looks ok at a distance.

happy with it, looks good once built. def worth $140. max recommended weight on the mantle top is 40 lbs, more than enough for a tv, etc. very sturdy once built.

note: I purchased this for my finished basement. i think it looks nice enough for a living room, but if you like things to look "high-end" I'd probably pass on it and grab a $700-ish level model of this type of item.
