No clue if the drives are CMR, SMR or whatever. They work for me. I keep redundant backups. I wouldn't trust these or any drives without at least one other backup of the data somewhere. All drives fail sooner or later.

I think they are failed 28-30TB data center drives that used HAMR and CMR possibly
i will never use a barracuda in my unraid or true nas server.
Well maybe unraid since its not real raid anyway

no way i will ever use these in true nas . Maybe unraid if i can determine if they are CMR
no specs listed and software really doesnt tell us. Also WD has used SMR drives before without telling customers the real specs.
AI Overview
unaware of the SMR implementation.
Key points about this issue:
Hidden SMR:
Some WD drives, particularly lower capacity WD Red NAS drives, were found to utilize SMR technology without clear disclosure in product descriptions or specifications, leading to customer complaints about unexpected performance issues.
Impact of SMR:
SMR drives can have significantly slower write speeds compared to CMR drives, especially when writing large amounts of data consecutively, making them less suitable for applications like NAS (Network Attached Storage) where frequent writes are common.
Customer backlash:
This practice drew criticism from users and tech communities who felt misled by WD's lack of transparency regarding SMR usage in certain drives.

I save almost every YouTube video that I watch. Or more accurately, I always download and save the YouTube videos that I want to watch. I only watch them after they've downloaded to my hard drive using JD2. The files are even bigger because I choose 2160p setting whenever possible in JD2. Sometimes they are 1TB to 2TB per week. (dont' necessarily watch them all, of course)
Frankly, because you will lose the warranty once you remove it from the clamshell, I don't think it's that great a deal. I bought a used white label 20TB seagate off eBay with a 1 year warranty and 80 power on hours for $160 and I have more faith in.
Still, if you want a new 20TB drive, this is clearly the best deal by quite a lot.
It's not worth the risk. Don't buy SMR drives. It will 100% affect your bandwidth and slow your machine down.

Even though they only have a year warranty, I'll be using them as backup drives so not too worried about the warranty. Most drives fail in first year and if you use a credit card that'll extend the warranty by another year (for most credit cards).
That said, these drives do get very hot in the plastic enclosure. I saw temperatures of up to 53C when doing a lot of reading/writing, so you might want to use a small USB fan or normal fan blowing on the enclosure to keep the drives cool. Using any kind of fan will drop the temperature by around 20C, so keep that in mind.

I got 3 or 4 in my unraid server.
I use only EXO or WD 18TB in my true nas server,
24 bay supermicros air flow is only a problem when rebuilding the array since i have consumer grade server fans in them with 3d printed fan cases to replace the supermicro stock fans which are a beast but are alot louder. When rebuilding my array i have to put a tower fan to blow on the drives at the front. I have my server rack right next to my whole house intake vent to distribute any heat from the rack to the entire house in the winter. I try to only rebuild my arrays in the winter ,when temps are under 70 degrees outside.
also whats even funnier i get free DC fast charging for a slickdeal on here and heat my house with a tower heater that pulls 1300w so i get about 32 hours of free heat . Slickdeals had a killer EV lease deal in my state with the green new scam rebates
(2) want to test my fiber internet provider's claim that the service is "truly unlimited"(their words)
(3) so I get to save videos that are interesting to me... but mostly car review videos and of course, cat videos
(4) JD2

Then you can listen to an audio podcast of one or more of the source videos mixed. Max of 50 though.
Saves a ton of time and no need to waste storage. You have the link to the video if you ever want to watch in the future.
If you want you can pay a VA a few bucks a week to do it for you for any channels you follow.
If you are into ai, then an agent can do this for you already without paying a VA.
