what does "Tri-mode" mean in terms of this lid? I googled and can't find anything to explain what the 3 modes are

The lid slider has three positions:
Closed: drinking slot covered, vent hole open.
Half-open: drinking slot half-open, vent hole covered
Open: drinking slot fully open, vent hole open

I guess the rationale on the half-open position is to allow you to halve the potential volume of liquid spilled while still being in a drinkable mode?

Yeah, seems like marginally useful feature-padding. Personally, for mugs like this, I prefer Yeti and their Magslider lids. It doesn't get any easier to clean than those.
