Turns out it was the dumbest decision of my life. I took that car down something meant for off-roading vehicles only!! I was young and stupid so the signs that said "high clearance required" seemed to apply to my soccer mom SUV lol.
The first section wasn't too bad, a dirt road that was narrow and flanked by shrubs that would leave a bunch of tiny scratches in my paint, the most minor of oopsies on this adventure.
By the time I made it through that it was past the point of no return (or so I told myself). What came next would be sections where the car would have to be on slants and maneuver around huge boulders that I had never encountered (I had zero experience with off-roading). It was all extremely scary.
The penultimate challenge was a section where I needed to perform a specific maneuver in order to avoid absolutely nailing the underside of my RAV4 and thus leave us stranded in the middle of nowhere. That or completely losing grip and falling off a cliff and getting myself really hurt. If you ask me today I don't know why I went for it, I mean there was no other choice with zero reception and nightfall approaching. Somehow the RAV4 did it, it was a miracle.
(it's hard to remember or describe. all I remember was having to go in one direction and immediately slam the wheel in the opposite direction to avoid being stuck on a boulder but also needing to avoid a cliff edge to my right.)
Finally I get close to the highway but the course throws me another one: cross a not so minor water section. It was deep enough to be worried but I had come so far and it was dark at this point. I backed up as far as I could and floored it, at one point I felt the tires give and the car slide sideways but I had enough momentum to get back to traction and the other side!!
I took a rav4 down a remote off-roading course in Big Bend, TX and both myself and the car lived to tell the tale. That was like 10 years ago and easily the dumbest thing I will ever do

I came for the gym mats, but stayed for the harrowing tale.
