Toshiba left [consumerist.com] the TV game. Hisense bought [hisensehvac.com] them out and took over production.
Isn't Toshiba a Japanese brand? Since the TV meets Dolby Vision standards, it can't be too bad—or perhaps I'm misunderstanding the requirements for Dolby Vision? (I'm inferring that the TV must meet certain brightness, contrast, and color capabilities to qualify for Dolby Vision.)

Regardless, $200 shipped for a 55-inch Dolby Vision TV by a name brand is pretty decent, in my opinion. I would get this just for a cheap fourth PC monitor that I can affix to the wall for videos and status notifications, but I'm dirt broke at the moment...
Gave away the 50" version to a family member as a secondary TV. Personally, will not buy this brand of TV ever again. Take the negative reviews and comments about image quality seriously.

I believe Toshiba and Panasonic proper have both left the US TV market and now they just licence their name/trade dress to low level chinese manufacturers. Similar to what Sharp was doing ~8 years ago. Reminds me that I've been meaning to hunt down a well kept 1080p Pannny Plasma. New project for the day. Haha

IMO, these are just aimed at people that want the absolutely cheapest thing and/or refuse to buy TCL because of the Chinese boogeyman, but just end up doing the exact opposite of what their intention was out of sheer ignorance, aka the 22nd century American story so far.

I bought the 50" when it went for 120. It's no OLED, but for what I paid, it's a good deal. This 55" deal at 199 seems okay to me, but not a screaming deal.

And Fire TV is just soo bad. My MIL could not figure it out, so we swapped it with a Roku TV. Roku is so much more usable.

We're still in the 21st century and will be for another 75 years. Of course, I'm assuming this country will still be around in 75 years, a dubious assumption considering the current state of our affairs.

Panasonic is still the same reputable Japanese brand; in fact they have just returned to the US TV market after a 10-year hiatus (they never stopped selling TVs in Europe in the meantime).
In 2024 they returned with the W95A Mini-LED (very good reviews and $800 at Costco for the 65"), and 2 OLEDs, the Z85A (I own one) and the flagship Z95A (a direct competitor of the LG G4.) AFAIK they've added a lower tier model for 2025 and upgraded the flagship OLED as well.
With that said though, they've just announced that they indeed are considering selling their TV division.

Panasonic still makes TVs but stopped selling them in the US for a few years. They recently came back. Their TVs are actually good.

Yes, they are still a player in SE Asia. I have a 2nd home in the Philippines and we have a Panasonic fridge and AC. Japanese owned but made in Thailand which has a good reputation for manufacturing.
