I got one of these last April. I have taken it on a few trips and it has been a major improvement on our travel and using hotel internet. We have Unifi home network equipment and I set up my home gateway to act as a VPN endpoint and have this point to our network when on the hotel internet. Then all of our DNS queries and everything pass through our home Pi-Hole.

It's helpful for privacy, but we aren't doing anything major when traveling typically. What's really nice is the on-the-go ad blocking through Pi-Hole no matter where we are or what device is connected. And it's using the ad blocking lists I have curated over the years for our Pi-Hole, so it beats just trying to use a separate service/addon on each device we take with us.

They have definitely come a long way on the firmware stability and passing along captive portals.

That's the Slate 7, which replaces the Slate AX (AXT1800). Beryl's 7 replacement hasn't been announced yet.

Just wondering, how often when folks use these things is there an Ethernet port available? When I travel, I mostly only able to get Wi-Fi. These things are versatile, so you can set them up as a client to Wi-Fi and simultaneously act as an access point for your own network, but how useful is that, and is it worth the extra latency of adding another router?
I've been waiting for a Qualcomm-based 5G version for a while, but doesn't seem like it's happening (probably because it'd be too expensive). I'd love to replace my T-Mobile hotspot thing with one of these, instead of having ANOTHER device to carry/keep charged/find power.

I got this during the Oct 2023 sale for $80.72 and have traveled with this device many times over the past year. It works great and I'm very happy that they're still releasing new updates for it. It's a solid pickup for travelers with multiple devices.

Some places either limit how many devices you can connect, or charge you a separate fee for each one. This gets around that.

Plus, corporate laptops often don't let you add custom VPN policies, but this does.

yes that's correct, no ethernet that I can remember, and you have to pay for internet access. I think the one I went on, they had starlink so the internet was really good. You also can bring the router around with you if you want, I didn't do that since I was trying to limit my internet usage while on vacation, but this router can be connected to a battery pack and brought around with you and all of your devices can connect to it.

Exactly. The USB port doesn't support a 4G/5G modem or a phone acting as one these things are not very useful.

I'll stick to mobile hotspot with PairVPN to bypass my cell phone hotspot limit.

What device are you referring to? The USB port on "these things" certainly does support that so not sure what it is you're talking about.

I recently took a tplink repeater re220 on royal Caribbean cruise and found their captive portal only allows one device to connect despite the repeater taking care of the captive login.

This would produce the same result I guess
