Great price, but infuriating they didn't stick a 2nd 2.5 eth port on this thing. Would be an incredible Proxmox OPNSense setup.

These are relatively older models and hence 1x RJ-45 instead of 2 and 1x M.2 + 1x 2.5", instead of 2x M.2 2280.

Remove wifi/Bluetooth card, drill hole in case, install 2.5gbe ethernet in the WiFi/Bluetooth slot. If it's going to be a proxmox server it likely won't be sitting on your desk as a show piece. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a solution.

Alternatively you could buy an external usb4 enclosure and move your nvme drive to that. My understanding is the OS sees them as an internal drive, at least mine does with Linux. Then buy a 2280 Ethernet card.

It's more infuriating that it's legal for them to say the 'regular' price is $709

I'm new to this, does the "barebones" model not come with any RAM or SSD? Are you supposed to connect the memory externally somehow?

This system is absolutely worth $200 if you have the basics to chuck inside of it, the 680m is basically an Xbox One/PS4 in terms of its graphical gaming performance, better the older the game is, lock your framerate to 30fps and all games are at medium or high settings. Sure, keyboard and mouse at 30fps is no bueno but that's what joypads are for.

no memory and no storage. You have to open it up to add the ram and ssd

Can the graphics card play games in 4K?

They have another model with 2 ethernet ports, albeit not 2.5. I think you kind of need to choose between price and future proofing. I mean, its only gigabit and low ram that isn't upgradeable, but its also only $90.

I owned this model when it was new. Very good performance, but the graphics will throttle back significantly during any demanding gaming use. Memory will also overheat and throttle. I never had any blue screens but some days it would not post, just fan noise and that's it. I had to unplug the power for 60 seconds and then plugged back in and it would finally post. I sold it a year ago and as far as I know, it's still working.

This was the quality of the Minisforum refurb I bought in December. https://imgur.com/a/SuhpBGz. It looked like someone used it as a football. I returned it, never buying a refurb from them again

lol, I was just about to mention someone posting pics of an absolute hack job of a refurb from Minisforum on the minipc subreddit and here you are 👍🏻

Yeah, I wouldn't roll the dice on this.

I wanted to get this model when it first came out but it was to expensive at the time. This is much better pricing.

The 680m has double the performance of the previous 5000 series graphics. The 780 is a 10-15% improvement.

This setup would be ideal for a Batocera install. It would play everything better than the Steamdeck. But don't expect PC gaming to be amazing, mainly 1080p low settings, 30fps. It's more so for emulation.
