Screen wise the iPad Pro wins hands down.
But here's where it gets interesting. If you add the Magic Keyboard case for the iPad, you would be spending the same amount for a MacBook Pro 14" M4 base. Which currently goes for $1400 on amazon.
Your specs would double from 8GB to 16GB
256GB storage to 512GB storage.
MacBook pros XDR display is on par with iPad pros OLED.
I feel like Apple did this on purpose. lol
Next week Apple is going to announce the M4 MacBook Air. But I'm sure it will contain the same 60hz display that we've seen for years.
I picked up a used Galaxy Tab S7. Sure it's a little laggy, but it was $250 and it has an OLED screen. Perfect for movies, undemanding games, email and chatting, etc.
I honestly think Apple made this thing so good, that it had to neuter it somehow just so they wouldn't cannibalize their own sales.

On a typical work day, I probably use it at least 2 hours, but I've gone as high as 6-8. On the weekend it is usually strictly streaming apps and doesn't get as much use, but still enjoyable.

Only other IPP's I've had is the M1 11" and M2 13"... I really struggled to notice an improvement from the M2 13" since they already have the mini LED screen, I honestly don't know if M4 OLED is "better", just different tradeoffs from that one. Definitely a little better than the M1 IPS, however with anything you get used to it.
All that matters is if the screen looks really good to you, if so I wouldn't sweat it myself.

Consolidation: I've scanned all my family photos and they live on the iPad with me as a portable picture viewer. All the notes i've made on my iPhone or documents I've scanned is on iCloud meaning my tablet can view that as well. I've used the Focus settings to turn my 13" iPad into a Carplay screen and use it in car, makes scrolling around on Maps way easier than a laggy slower product. Sketching and not just for graphic design, you have an entire arsenal with Procreate and I also take my iPad on site for marking up drawings on site visits (Architecture). There's a hundred reasons to own a tablet in general versus a laptop, but if specs is the only thing you are looking at, then yes, your opinion will be swayed.
I begrudgingly bought one of these when Costco had this price, fully expecting to return it. Which I did, to purchase another m4 when Amazon and Target were selling them for $800. With Apple's ridiculous pricing, i had been strongly considering trying an Android tablet or the on-sale iPad Air. Thing is, no matter which Apple tablet I buy, the cost breakdown equates (for me) to $50-100/yr which is peanuts compared to how much I use them. My most recent iPad from 2019 (base model with 128gb storage) cost me ~$340 w/ tax. Even though battery life had diminished and it was pretty sluggish the past ~2 years, I didn't replace it till picking up this m4 OLED.
And that's the key here. Despite Apple's insane profit margins, this thing doesn't skimp.
- Plenty of storage versus those 64gb base models that are always discounted (128gb should be the minimum imo).
- Great speakers. Better than my rtx 4080 laptop or the 9th gen base iPad that Apple gimped with no stereo sound.
- badass SoC, a perf/watt beast even if that also comes with Apple gatekeeping versus a proper full-fledged OS with more compatibility. Given the slowed pace of silicon gains these days and the shake-up between Intel/AMD/Qualcomm/etc, this iPad should be solid for at least 5 years minimum. Maybe by then some Linux (Valve) device will break the Windows/Apple/Google stranglehold.
- OLED screen, just to make sure this device has no major flaws (except that price!). Sure oled is unimportant in most non-hdr scenarios, but *good* oled or mini-led with proper HDR screens can be transformative when watching movies or gaming. My Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch both have OLED and are awesome when combined with the right game. Ditto my TV when streaming a lot of content or playing pc/ps5 games.
Bottom line: m4 iPad Pro may not be worth it for a lot of people, but on its own merits, this thing is badass. I especially like that we can limit battery charging to 80% now to preserve battery life over the long term. My biggest complaint beyond the sticker shock would be that I wish the device was just a bit thicker or something for more battery capacity. Apple has always been really stingy about their batteries (great for encouraging more frequent upgrades and e-waste), and (for my uses) this iPad would benefit hugely from another 15-20%.
Also, it's hilarious how fired up the trolls in these threads get over their various corporate allegiances. PlayStation vs Xbox, Nvidia vs AMD, Apple vs Windows vs Google vs Ford vs Chevy lol. Why do you guys care so much?
Yeah, I own several Apple products, but that doesn't mean I'm unaware of Apple's stupid naming/marketing and many other garbage business practices. But that applies to every publicly-traded big-ass company that prioritizes shareholder value and profits. And even when it's a privately-held company that has (mostly) been beneficial to society (Valve or Patagonia as examples), there's still miscues and some random malcontent pooping on them despite whatever net-positive has been achieved. Example: Epic Game Store and Classic A jerk Tim Sweeney were right about Valve/Steam being too powerful/centralized and exerting too much control over the market. So all this years later, Epic GS has been an absolute success, yet their UI is slow and basically crap, their features/community/sorting/filtering all suck, and Sweeney is still ranting.
Point being: it's very easy to bitch and moan, but not so easy to build something other people care about. If trolls would put more effort into the latter and less of towards the former, well dang… we could probably bypass the trillion dollar duopoly corps for locally owned solutions, co-ops, and open source.

It's more limited than a laptop, but great for vacationing.
If you're online more than a few hours a day, it's a great value. I've had a 2020 IPP and it's still handling everything except for ipad games at AAA prices.
Android/Samsungs are cheaper, but their lower resale value reflects how much less you get back from it. Android owners buy newer models to keep up with hardware. IOS owners can wait a couple more years for hardware, but upgrade more because they don't want to be left behind on looks.
If I were to get an M4, I would expect for it to run another 5-7 years without any loss in performance.
Hope that makes sense why it's worth the extra couple hundred....
