    • Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard: Fall Weed & Feed rounds out the year by controlling existing listed weeds and nourishing your lawn so it can recover from summer stresses and build strong roots so it can come back better next spring.
  • Ideal for small lawns up to 4,000 sq. ft.
  • Everything you need to promote a vibrant spring green-up, prevent crabgrass, kill annoying lawn weeds and insect pests, recover from summer stresses, and build strong roots before winter

First to control crabgrass you get a much better bang for your buck with granular prodiamine, and mixing it with water. And doing a liquid application with a sprayer. Example I bought 5lbs of this last spring and I should have enough for 2x applications each year for 2+ years on my 1 acre proprety. That 5lb container cost me about $90. The coverage and effectiveness of this is much better than anything Scotts will sell you.

Fertilizer wise, Lesco from your local siteone can be bought for less than Scotts on the regular.

Tip from experience, buy your fertilizer off season when its on clearance. Big savings to be had there. In the end nitrogen is nitrogen. I haven't really seen any difference in Scotts, to Lesco... to off brand
I had this spreader and it was pretty awful. The wheels are hollow and you can get buildup in the wheels. You can mitigate this by covering it up. The other problem is the slinger is set too low and a portion will be blocked by the wheels. If you're spreading fertilizer, it will cause striping in your lawn.
Deal for larger spreader and larger bags also available which I'm considering for a larger lawn.

Nitrogen in fertilizers varies widely in how it's sourced and taken up by the plant. Cheaper fertilizers will use all or lots of Urea nitrogen, which is taken up immediately by the plant and can provide too much nitrogen at once. Better to look for CRN (Controlled Release) or SRN (Slow Released) fertilizers for turfgrass. Nitrogen isn't just Nitrogen when nitrogenized by plants.

I switched over to Lebanon Turf and Preen about six years ago and my results were so much better than Scott's.

Not entirely surprising, but it seems like regulations in CA prevent it from being shipped here.

Echoing another comment: the Scotts spreader wheels are notorious for getting product buildup in them as you walk and will create streaks in your lawn where too much gets applied and burns the lawn.

If you have a large lawn and don't need the spreader, Home Depot is doing a buy 40lb Scotts Turf Builder Halts Crabgrass Preventer with Lawn Food get 33lb Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed $50 off promotion. $100 for both depends on where you live.

You can pick up SummerGuard and WinterGuard later when they are on sale.

these are 1) the smaller bags that don't cover much lawn,2) that have somewhat comparable prices on amazon (esp with sub and save) 3) they are most likely last seasons leftover stock and not as viable as fresh product. you are savings maybe $20 (plus the free speader if you need one) for the "trouble" of housing these 4 bags for the next few months. its a deal, but really only for those who need to really watch every penny. i personally wouldn't deal with the hassle of storing them for the nominal savings.

when not using organic-y stuff lawn burn is a REAL concern and as other slickdealers have pointed out above this spreader is pretty poor quality. i prefer their handheld spreader and only fill it half way with product to avoid clogging etc.

This is a great deal ... for me to poop on!

For some of us, we can spread this fertilizer all over the snow covering our yards!

I second that, same problem with mine unfortunately. Took me a while to figure out why my lawn had streaks. I thought it was me and my technique. After a couple of seasons I realized that fertilizer leaks during operation and builds up/trickles down along the wheel causing the streaks.

Yes, this really sucks. 5000 was just enough for my lawn. Now 4000 is too small and 12000 is too big.
