Often this symptom is confused with air in the intake tube. One day you will try to start a brew, and it will make a whirring sound and not pump anything out. While it could be a tube clog, the thing to try is fill the water reservoir halfway to three-quarters, then lightly bounce it (just the plastic reservoir container, not the whole unit) up and down off its seating. You should see little bubbles coming up from the bottom of the intake assembly, that's air getting forced out of the line. Keep the bouncing going until the bubbles pretty much stop. Pumping may start working again.

This happened to me a couple of weeks into owning mine. The solution is hard to find, and I am guessing 96.4% of those that run into the issue will not discover the fix and return it. Perhaps that's what these "open box" units are.

All that said, do descale when the indicator tells you to, either with off-the-shelf cleaning solution, or homemade vinegar ones found online, if for no other reason than to make the descale light go away. It is on a timer, it will nag for descale whether you have hard water or not.
