What's the difference between $60 vs $200 mesh wifi systems for home use? I'm on 300M internet connection.

It depends, What's your use case ? Service speed? Wired nodes or wireless?

CPU and Ram is the same, the only difference is MX10600 has 2 x 5ghz bands (one ac one ax) and the MX8500 has 1x 5ghz ax and the third band is 6ghz.
If you have no 6ghz clients you won't see any difference. Also the 6ghz band has a ~50% shorter range than 5ghz.

Looks like a solid deal to get 6ghz. Has openwrt support.
I believe the 6GHz band is for wireless backhaul so your 2.5 and 5GHz bands that the majority of devices use aren't slowed doing backhaul too.

I got a $20 pair of MX4200 routers from another Woot deal earlier this week. They aren't even here yet. In a true Slickdeals fashion, I am already thinking to upgrade. Big Grin

Do these MX8500 routers provide a much better performance (speed and coverage)? I don't mind spending the $80 on a MX8503 set. I probably need just one router (no mesh setup).

And does the firmware have to flashed to OpenWRT for these to work well? Or is the factory firmware stable enough?

i bought 8. my house i am running 4 right now in mesh mode.
parents house, same 4 mesh setup.
I am also using a ln1301 mesh setup of 4. Wired backhaul. One of my nodes shows (in app) it's connected wirelessly (instead of using wired, generally happens after power trip). Is there a way to limit it to wired backhaul only during mesh setup?

Same. It's too late to cancel, so I plan to use the 6e units indoors, and the cheaper mx4200s outdoors on a covered porch

For $20, I wouldn't worry about cancelling. At that price, you could easily sell them locally. But the Linksys MX8503 went OOS too soon while I was still making up my mind.

This router is $159 on Amazon - $25 clip coupon. Nice stable alternative to the net gear night hawks.

Correct but wifi 6 is really the key to this. The handoff on wifi 4/5 is absolutely terrible. Wifi 6 has virtually seamless handoff.
That's true. 6 made the process much cleaner.

all these router daily deals will never match the $20 BRAND NEW Linksys LN1301-MX4200_MX4300_MX4301_AX4200-Tri-Band WiFi 6 Router
Of the 6 I got (3 for me, 2 for in-laws, 1 for my parents) I only paid $20 for one of them. The rest were all $15! Happily running DD-WRT on all of them. My parent node has three VLANs in addition to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks (the low-band 5GHz radio is the mesh backhaul), always-on OpenVPN, WireGuard, and AdGuard. No reboots and no drops. I cannot imagine a better deal.

I'm still running mine on factory firmware. Worth the time to get ddwrt going huh? I did have some instability for a couple days but fine since.

Would really appreciate a writeup of how you did all that. Ive been waiting for everything to stabilize before unpacking mine.

For most people, not much. For the average user, you probably won't notice much of a difference. Fo advanced users, there could be features or items they seek. The more expensive models *might* be able to handle more clients at once (100+.). Generally this is achieved by having more RAM, faster processor and/or more/better antennas.

There are other bells and whistles too. e.g. some offer a 3rd dedicated band that is used for the nodes to communicate with each other vs sharing the same wifi channels as the devices. More expensive models may support the latest wifi standards such as wifi 6e or 7, which offers faster connectivity speeds and potentially lower latency, and wifi7 is the first wifi standard that is full duplex. But again, real world this doesn't translate into a significant difference in experience.

Maybe if you are a hardcore gamer, but most hardcore gamers I know wouldn't use wifi, they would use ethernet to ensure absolute lowest latency possible. I've oversimplified much of this, there are other reasons. My cousin has 300mbs up/down and I got her a $50 mesh system of amazon that works fine, can max out her connection, and has been solid. The biggest issue I've seen with the budget brands is continued support. If they stop offering firmware updates, and a big security flaw is discovered, you either have to risk continuing to use it, try to load custom firmware if it supports it, or replace it.

I'm not saying the more expensive models don't have their place and benefits. Just depends on the user and use case.

My MX8501 stopped receiving firmware updates about two years ago now, which is a shame considering it is WiFi6E with a Qualcomm cpu in it. I stopped using it due to that.

Yup, that is the main reason I got these to replace my 3 solid MX4300 I got for $15 each. Will replace and see if the handoff is better. The other reason is that it took a while to figure out how to set up the MX4300 on linksys factory firmware as AP and wired backhaul, so it should be much faster this second time around. BTW, they have been running rock solid for a while.. There are all sorts of tricks in setup that arent documented anywhere including the threads on SD.
